Jeff studied Icelandic and sez its a proto-norwegian. He said that the western dialects of Norwegian are very close. Maybe Carl should start with Norwegian....

love the fact that he's wanting to learn Icelandic to read the Sagas in the original!

(The reason I took German in college, was because Peter Schilling and Nena had German language songs, and I wanted to learn what was lost in translation.)

If he has LJ, I can suggest learn-nordic. He'll need to join the community to see many of the members-only resource posts. (Partly because some of the resources are a bit "grey".)

i don't remember much, but i can try being a language partner, and i have lots of icelandic music to share.
i will say, though, that i recently read a snippet from an Old Norse text and was able to understand it just fine with my knowledge of Modern Icelandic.
