Standards, especially in the art world, are what you make them, what you can defend, and what people will like. There was a guy 20 years ago that made paintings - that sold for tens of thousands of dollars! - by putting the canvas in the backwash of a jet engine and throwing cans of paint in the wind stream.
My ex of 12 years was an artist so I have a lot of experience with the art community. In my experience, artists are ALWAYS their own harshest critics. If you can channel your critical eye to improve how you perceive your art, then by all means do so, but don't use the criticism to beat yourslef up.
