So, a while back, I wrote about having procured a bunch of old cards and letters sent to my grandfather from Sweden. I've felt for a while now, that I feel a bit odd never having met this huge family that I still have in Sweden; that there are cousins and uncles and aunts and who-knows-what-else in Sweden still, and NOT knowing these people makes

I'd say Go for it... the worst response you can get is a rejection and then you'll be able to know that at least you did your part...
Furthermore, if Swedes are anything like most of us Danes, they'll be more than capable to conduct a conversation in English... So you shouldn't worry about that issue.

Write in Swedish even if you're likely to make mistakes. It can't hurt and might show some seriousness on your part.
