As far as age-appropriate explanations go, I think both you and she hit the nail on the head back in the day-- that is what she was able to understand, and she "got it" and she related. Now she "gets it" in a more full understanding because she's able to, since she's matured in five years' time.

Good on you & Carl for being the counter to whatever unpleasant stereotypes gays get smacked with in her life.

Your response was perfect. It's the gay panic people who worry that exposing their children to a gay couple requires them to explain homosexuality, or worse, gay sexual behavior. When they see a straight couple, do they feel compelled to teach their kids about heterosexual sex?

It's all about calm, age-appropriate answers to their natural questions.
