Milk

Finally -- the movie Milk opened up here Friday night. I hate the fact that we get some movies MONTHS after everyone else -- it's like I'm in another country sometimes!! "If it plays in Peoria" my ass!!

I went Friday night with slavetoreznor and teledude. Carl didn't think eating and seeing the movie would be possible before he had to work, so I unfortunately had ( Read more... )

You do realize, of course, that this is going to be just like the time we were both at Touché together, and you made some offhand remark about you being the one bear that I hadn't played with in the Chicago area.

Right? ^_-

I still remember when they were filming Milk in SF. I can't say I have the first inkling of a desire to see it - I hate gay movies because they rarely are anything but a gay movie. But, like so many things that are bringing this country or communities in this country together, I'm glad this is bringing people together and at least opening up a bit of a mild discussion.

Mind you, HM wouldn't have the legacy if he wasn't killed - he'd end up like any of SF's other gay supervisors - suprfluous and nothing but a politician.

I felt the movie was more political than gay. I didn't feel like the gay theme was any more blunt than it needed to be, so hopefully it won't be too bad if you decide to see it.

After watching the movie, I bought Randy Shilts' The Mayor of Castro Street. It was interesting to see Harvey Milk's views on city politics that didn't relate to gay rights. Also, I have to wonder where a lot of people would be if the assassination didn't take place. Obviously, Harvey Milk wouldn't have become the symbol he is, but I wonder if Dianne Feinstein would've peaked as President of the Board of Supervisors, or if she would've ended up becoming mayor in the 80s anyway. I dunno, a lot to think about!

When I saw the movie in Columbus, it was a matinee showing filled with mostly older women. I feel a bit uncomfortable watching gay sex on screen with women older than my mom, but I got over it.

I also thought that James Franco was excellent. Penn and Brolin got Oscar nods, but I think that Franco should have been considered for best supporting actor. (In contrast, I think Diego Luna as Jack Lira was horrible. Every time he was on screen it felt like an SNL skit.)

I went with Showmegrizz Friday night. It's a good film, the use of period footage mixed in gave it a documentary feel, and it was well done.

It brought back the downfall of Anita Byant, and shows one of the key points of the modern gay rights movement. I wish they had mentioned the 1969 Stonewall march which was the start of it. But the activism that Harvey rallied, and yes was martyred for is another critical point.
