Things I Look Forward To Enjoying More

Multilingual Monday later tonight, and a full "my weekend in Benton Harbor" write-up later (tomorrow, maybe, when I get the pics up), but inspired by our Michigan mini-getaway, two things that I look forward to enjoying more:

  • Ice wine. Good LORD the sample i had was exquisite! Yesterday in Saugatuck we sampled wines from a local winery and the ice ( Read more... )
  • wine, michigan, travel, movies

Whether it's ice wine or Eiswein, it's always expensive. Kracher, an Austrian label, is probably the best I've tasted. I think at one time his California-based co-venture, Mr K., was a little more moderately priced, but probably not any more. I've heard good things about Inniskillin in Canada (the Niagara Peninsula now produces more ice wines than anywhere else), but I've never had it myself.

Incidentally, if you like ice wine, you might want to try "Beerenauslese". It's also made from grapes which are allowed to mature longer than usual, but which don't undergo freezing.

Thanks, honey; I'll see about trying the Kracher and the Beerenauslese. I'm still relatively new to wines so I'm fairly open to suggestion.

You could do both: They make a Beerenauslese that is excellent. But you'd probably rather blow that money on kilts and kipot, so try one of the wines recommended by cpratt and v3rnon instead.

Hehehe, don't bet the farm on it, honey; I can't justify spending the amount a kilt costs, on a kilt, particularly the Jewish tartan one. That'd be more "Roger and Carl go traveling to another [part of the] country and sample the local wine" money than kilt money. :: laugh ::

    (And hey, kippot are cheap!)

Icewine is generally unaffordable - but if you like the style, then there are plenty of good late harvest wines available that are far less expensive and taste fairly similar.

Kiona Late Harvest Gewürztraminer or Pacific Rim Vin de Glaciere are both excellent choices in the $15 range.

I'll give one of these a try -- thank you! We've both become more a fan of wines as of late -- Carl especially -- and this kind of advice (and looking back at your Wine Blog as well) are helping considerably.

I'm with the rest -- ice wine is too pricey for my tastes.

I'd suggest trying a bottle of Hogue Cellars Late Harvest Riesling. It's easy on the wallet and it's generally easy to find. You might also try finding a bottle of wine called "Elektra" by Quady Vineyards. It's also a dessert wine.

Is there anything you could compare Elektra to?

Electra reminds me of moscato d'Asti but without the bubbles. It's a low alcohol, sweet wine that smells like orange blossoms.

Hogue late harvest riesling is a cheapie but goodie; there are lots of sweet Washington rieslings out there that don't cost the earth. They aren't quite like icewine - proper dessert wines have very high acidity to balance out the sweetness - but they can be a lot of fun. To be honest, they remind me of tej.

I really can't think of anything that makes a good comparison. For me, it's probably one of the closest things to an ice wine that isn't.

I don't know how readily available it is outside of Kansas, but there's a Kansas vineyard that makes a really awesome semi-sweet cherry wine. It's from Wyldewood Cellars. It's something that if your local liquor store doesn't have I'd ask them to get it. It's my roommate's favorite and so we buy it by the case at a significant discount.

Metropolis is amazing. I also recommend his film "M" .

Heheh, "M" is the film that one of the "Metropolis is just 'eh'" guys had recommended to me -- I've yet to see it but I'll see about finding it ...

When you watch it, keep in mind that it was made pre WW2 and that makes it all the more profound to think of the talent pool that Germany lost to Hollywood back in the day.

Be forewarned, though, you'll have In the hall of the Mountain King going through your head for days.
