Online Communities and Death

So, today I look through my friends' list on LJ, and I realize that a growing number of the people on my list don't post anymore. Not because they're lazy or anything, but rather because they're deceased ( Read more... )

I hear you and understand Roger. I have a couple of friends still listed in my Yahoo messanger who have 'left the building' and I haven't been able to remove them. It's odd, but such is the case.

However, with their journals, why remove them? To an extent, to go back and read is a bit like pullng a book off the shelf. Would you throw out a book because of the author's demise? To keep them on your friends list serves as an aid, then next time you need to 'take the book off the shelf' again.

Hugs.

Same boat here... Somehow it just feels wrong. I can't do it either. I miss James every day and I'm sure it's no different with your loved ones.

I understand and am there right now. 3 LJ's remain alive even though their owners are no longer with me. I can read them and remember, yes it will bring tears, but more often than not, it brings a quiet chuckle as well... and therein is their immortality.

Having lived through the terror of the 80's with the memories of those men still here, I wish I had had something like LJ to help hold all the memories and thus have a portion of my friends still with me.

We want to hold on to whatever we can. My step-mother's answering machine still has my Dad's voice on it.

And ever since he passed away, I save all the voice mails my Mom leaves for me at work. Because what if suddenly one day that's all I have left?
