Amusement About Market Days

Aug 04, 2006 18:52

My old synagogue will have a booth up at Market Days, and apparently that booth is being shared with the Gay Mormons of America.

Erm, am I the only one that sees something wrong there? Once you come out as gay don't you get excommunicated from the Mormon church and thus aren't considered Mormon?? o_O

Yeah, but what if you consider yourself a Mormon?

[I don't get it either...]

I work with a woman whose son is a leader in the gay Mormon community, and they just found out recently that he would not be excommunicated. It came down to the decision of the local clergy; I’m not sure how much of it was due to open-mindedness on the part of the bishop, and how much was due to any political sway the family might have.

it was probably neither.
the church has not excommunicated me. I am defellowshipped. It is the local council of the 12's ultimate decision but some of us are immune to being excommunicated for that. See: Patriarchial blessings.

Well, he wasn’t defellowshipped, either.

Unless they have a really really good reason that won't make it past Salt Lake. In the LDS church all things flow up to Salt Lake City for final approval. When I was 15 the Fayetville Stake President (area leader) excommunicated his own son.

just because you are ex-communicated doesn't mean you don't continue to identify as one. being mormon is more like a race or ethnicity or country of origin. Just because you move from the USA to England doesn't mean being American isn't still part of who you are.

I speak from personal experience.

Okay, so it's similar to lapsed Catholics still considering themselves Catholic despite the fact that they may even have negative feelings towards the chuch and believe none of the beliefs.

I would figure that someone who is cut like that from Mormondom would, likewise, try to distance himself FROM the Mormon church -- but again, if you spent a great deal of your life as a Mormon it's not like it just disappears ...

I believe that as long as a gay Mormon doesn't act on his feelings, he won't be excommunicated. I'm gonna ask Jared... he'll know.

[phone clicks]

Oh, thank you for holding...

Well, Jared isn't answering the text message I sent him and I'm too impatient to wait more than four minutes.

I did find this tidbit of information: Clicky, clicky!
