and I can't stand Imaaaaani's song. 1998 had almost 10 really good song, most of which should've placed ahead of "Where Are you?"

Including "Is Always Over Now" which might well have won Ireland #8 in a jury year.

Oh you say that about EVERY Irish entry. :: laugh ::

(I agree, it was a good song -- not a winner in my book, but certainly top 10. My winner that year was The Netherlands. Why do I always like the songs that come in 4th place?!? "Fiumi di Parole", "HaSheket sheNish'ar", "For Real", "Ey Sham", "Hemel en Aarde", "Je N'ai Qu'une âme" -- these were all my douze point songs ... and now that I think about it, they all came in 4th. o_O)

Oh gawd no! I'm much more partial to francophone schlager ballads about life, kids, you know, wot it all means.

[un banc, un arbre, une rue; un jour, un enfant, croire, si la vie est cadeau...but not that shiteawful l'oiseau et l'enfant].

Mostly l like songs and women who can sing. :)

are you sufficiently atoned, young man?

Definitely for me, in that group of songs, I'd pick "Un banc, un arbre, une rue", "Après toi", "Tu te reconnaîtras" -- most certainly "Je suis l'enfant soleil" (another 4th placer! E-freakin'-gad!). They're good songs AND they had great performances (even if Ann-Marie David's eyes were a tad scary at times :: laugh ::).

Mostly l like songs and women who can sing. :)

I agree wholeheartedly. And songs like that seems painfully rare these days. :: sigh ::

are you sufficiently atoned, young man?

I'll say. Dad's not Jewish and started cooking a rotisserie chicken yesterday afternoon -- I was ready to smack him, but I suppose I can count it as part of the atonement. :: laugh ::

“Love shine a light” was one of the first non-“Waterloo” Eurosongs I liked. If it were on jawnbc’s poll, I’d very likely vote for it. There’s a scant number of British entries I actually enjoy.

Imaani’s tune is...nice. bigjohnsf hates it, but I thought it was...nice. Her performance is good and the melody is catchy, but it’s a tad repetitious. As far as 90’s British tunes go, I prefer “Lonely Symphony”.

But the most underrated British entry has to be “Why do I always get it wrong?” I’d like to hear a legitimate explanation as to why “Rock Me”* is superior to this.

*ugh! Note to Eurovision juries, stop smoking crack!

I think it's a good song -- don't get me wrong. However, it was a bit hokey to me and I kept imagining that song segueing into bad Christian Pop and the next stanza'd be about "Jay-zus". 9_9 I always preferred "Fuimi di Parole" and "Dinle", and with some Eurofans this seemingly brands me a heretic -- you'd think I announced Çetin Alp's "Opera" the best entry, ever (which, BTW -- yes, I saw it. I still stick by the horridness of Ping Pong's "Sameax", danke schön. At least there's some singing ability and amusement to be had in "Opera").

Imaani’s tune is...nice.

I like the catchiness of it, and I admit I like it more than "Love Shine a Light", even IF lyrically the entry makes little sense -- to put it mildly ^_-

I’d like to hear a legitimate explanation as to why “Rock Me”* is superior to this.

You know, that tops my list of Eurovision Winners I Despise. That being said, there was a LOT of crap in 1989. No, really -- like, a Chinese junk full of shit.

Yeah you're right. Cock Me may even beat Wiggey woo wiggey Fey for most pathetic, embarassing, let's-just-cancel-it-if-this-is-what's-gonna-win drek ever.

And Love Shine a Light was the first winner to use the "bait and switch mix" to their advantage: the pre-release version is much tamer, less percussive, less anthemic. During the broadcast when Katrina sings "and we'll AAALLL..." with the backup singers, they had it sewn up. It really should have been 1 of the jury's 4 picks, since it remains the biggest winner (highest percentage of possible points) ever.

Yeah, how the fuck did that happen? I'll acknowledge that even if I didn't think it was the best, TONS did (it got 227 points, something you didn't see until 30+ countries started voting), yet somehow it's not in Congratulations?

(Yet certain questionable songs are?? Hrm. o_O)
