They should have kept it. The reasoning is dumb. Given what was going on, he probably shouldn't have looked like the Arthur "we knew."

I agree. Quite a few of the PTB reasons / decisions squarely fall into the dumb category.... This included.

I think they were still trying to cater to a younger audience (with this decision), when really the audience was growing with the show, and could have easily accepted a slightly 'different' Arthur. It's almost insulting that they couldn't / wouldn't give the audience enough credit with accepting different versions of the same character.

If we could accept Gwen and Morgana having completely different hair styles for entire series' to show their change in circumstance, we could certainty have accepted Arthur having a new hair length for a few episodes at least.

If they really wanted to, they could have had gone both ways and had Arthur cut his hair back to normal once he became King and was past the turbulence he was experiencing dealing with his father, being prince regent etc.

But I guess it's all a moot point now anyway.... ;\
