I got good at repairing small drywall holes when Robert used a hammer to put a bunch of holes in his bedroom walls. I clean up the hole, cut a piece of cardboard slight bigger than the hole. Then poke a hole in the middle, run a string through the hole and knot it. Fold the cardboard in half and push inside the hold, unfold it and pull it tight with the string. Then holding the string fill the hole with latex spackling, it was important to use latex as it is very light and will stay in place. Hold the string for about 10 minutes. Then wait over night. Cut the string and sand.

I ran across this method on some do it yourself website.
