The only thing stopping me from becoming an alcoholic/pill addict is the fact that I can't accept there is a higher power than me, in case I'm ever court-ordered to join a 12-step program.

Stubborn I know. Don't wanna admit I'm powerless over the urge to be headfirst in the toilet, following a six-day bender. Don't wanna end up getting in the wrong bed and accidentally molesting a relative. Don't wanna pee in the closet some day, thinking it's the bathroom. Don't wanna show up smelling of booze to a review at work (assuming I ever get a job).

Those are good reasons. I'm like the most atheist person in the world, and even I think that "Because it'd ruin my life" is a better reason that "Because court might make me lie about admitting God exists" (:

Ever since I read For Us, the Living, I've been pondering how much better life would be without religion interfering in the nuances of everyone's life. It seems this is an easier one to change than, say, marriage.

I'd rather have a contract of one year "marriage," with my chosen partner, than a never-ending misery where the once-loving participants do not willingly stay in the same room any longer than they have to.

(Yes, I went home to visit my parents this weekend.)
