Where everyone can discuss engineering issues.

When it happens to be the only piece of equipment supplying our gravity? I'd have a pitchfork-wielding mob howling for my blood. I'm going to work on my theory then try build up scaled-down versions to make sure I'm not going wildly off base.

[Howard nods his head, respectfully.] I like that. When I start to actually tinker with the engines, I'll follow the same principle.

It's a good thing we're not lacking for space in the labs.

It's a good thing we're not lacking for a lot of technology. I'm glad I got stuck on the insane floating death trap with good tools and materials. [A wry smirk.]

It's going to be a luxury not having to cannibalise televisions and bedframes for a change.

I tell you what. I'm glad I don't have to rip apart entire sections of the ship to get what I want.

What I'm interested in is finding out if it's possible to rebuild the communication system. If we can find allies in this universe that will change our situation completely.

That's actually a good point - and if we get some allies, maybe we'll get some better idea of what we're up against.

There's a planet out there The Consortium is based upon. I don't know if they're supportive or ignorant of our plight, but if there's a way to listen in to their internal communications we might be able to form an idea.

That's not bad ... listening to their radio waves, figure out whether or not they'd be willing to help us out or is just someone else we have to run from.

It'll give us an idea of where to point our escape rockets, at least.

Precisely! As soon as I've built us the escape rockets.

It's something we'd have to be careful with. We don't want to draw too much attention to ourselves in the mean time. But we do need to find out more about the Consortium's planet and our location in space.

Would there be a way to rig it so we can listen to their frequencies, but they can't listen in on us? That'd be the main thing I'd be worried about.

Easily, for now, since we don't even need to build a transmitter until we've decided what sort of signal we want to transmit.
