[Prongs is still, completely and utterly, standing like a statue with his eyes on the werewolf. He's trying to think of anything, but the noises are striking fear into the deer and pain into the boy. His eyes flick to Padfoot, lowering his head just a minute amount. He paws the ground as loud as he can, trying to distract the wolf, and then sets off in a circle around him. He's not prey, but he's a distraction. Something that might take the wolf's mind off the pain, turning his attention to the deer]

[It won't work. It can't work, because everything smells like silver and copper and blood and pain.

The wolf can't smell past it. Fire is ripping through it from the inside out and he howls and he howls and he tries to get it out but it only gets worse.

Vaguely it is aware of Pack nearby, of Deer and Dog who don't smell of copper or silver or pain. Pain is salt and sour and heat. Pain is digging under his skin, digging digging like fleas biting stabbing howling doesn't make it stop.

Scratching doesn't either and the wolf has been trying that for an hour, scratching to get the fire out and it hurts and he cannot stop howling, howling at the moon high above to make it stop like the cracking of bone never hurts it aches, it tugs, it bleeds warm and gushing from a wound in his side ripped open. Tearing, tearing flesh takes its mind off the liquid fire like he wants to die get it out get it out getitoutgetitout out howling doesn't make it stop. The deer prances round and round and the wolf follows, spinning, nose picking up everything ( ... )

[All Padfoot can do is watch, completely horrified as Moony rips himself to shreds in the corner until he's finally motionless. The dog stands there for what seems like hours just staring at the prone form when really only minutes have passed. Then he moves towards the werewolf, one paw, then another until he's at the wolf's side.

Padfoot dips his head to nudge Moony with his nose as if expecting him to get back up but he doesn't. He can't be dead. He just can't. Moony - Remus doesn't just die. Not when he had James and Sirius looking after him. Had they failed him when he needed them most? It certainly felt that way to Sirius. Even the prank on Snivellus had results this horrible ( ... )

[Prongs' galloping slows as the howls die, his hooves the only sound in the silence. He doesn't stop, though, keeping his eyes down until he can't resist and looks up to see Padfoot howling. He's barely moving now, just stepping forward, his head down, nostrils flaring at the scent of blood and gore and...death. He can smell it and he cringes, eyes focused on his herd, pack, whatever it is in his mind. His family, the ones he takes care of. One howling in silent pain, the other lying dead on the floor of a deserted theatre ( ... )
