The wolf can't smell past it. Fire is ripping through it from the inside out and he howls and he howls and he tries to get it out but it only gets worse.
Vaguely it is aware of Pack nearby, of Deer and Dog who don't smell of copper or silver or pain. Pain is salt and sour and heat. Pain is digging under his skin, digging digging like fleas biting stabbing howling doesn't make it stop.
Scratching doesn't either and the wolf has been trying that for an hour, scratching to get the fire out and it hurts and he cannot stop howling, howling at the moon high above to make it stop like the cracking of bone never hurts it aches, it tugs, it bleeds warm and gushing from a wound in his side ripped open. Tearing, tearing flesh takes its mind off the liquid fire like he wants to die get it out get it out getitoutgetitout out howling doesn't make it stop.The deer prances round and round and the wolf follows, spinning, nose picking up everything ( ... )

Padfoot dips his head to nudge Moony with his nose as if expecting him to get back up but he doesn't. He can't be dead. He just can't. Moony - Remus doesn't just die. Not when he had James and Sirius looking after him. Had they failed him when he needed them most? It certainly felt that way to Sirius. Even the prank on Snivellus had results this horrible ( ... )
