She'd never admit it, but Fluff was helping her calm down. Having the small white fuzzball pop out of her dresser when she went to get changed earlier in the day had surprised her. Being responsible for another creature's entire existence wasn't a responsibility she wanted to sign up for.

Now she had a furball, just like at least a dozen other subjects. Sakura almost threw the poor thing across the room when she heard Naruto knock on the door. It was ridiculous, she'd known he was coming, but there were things she wasn't sure she was ready to confront.

Explaining her legs was one of them, and probably the most obvious, physically. When she'd said they weren't okay, many thoughts had been running through her head. Her ongoing, self-moderated therapy had figured low in her own mind compared to the issues -- they were issues, weren't they? -- with each other. She couldn't bring herself to think about what had gone unsaid in the prior months, because all those experiences had been wiped clean. Events back home gave her enough to ( ... )

He should be happy to see her, right? Come to think of it, he didn't know why it took him so long in the first place. They should be able to smile and joke around.

Sakura took a step forward, fully intending to try and drag him inside if he stood, shocked, for much longer. If she had to revisit this territory, she damn well could do so from the fictitious comfort of her own assigned living space.

"It's a shorter story than you might guess." She was uncomfortable, holding onto the edge of irritation for familiarity's sake. "But it's not one I'm recapping for anyone who wants to listen."

He stumbled in, knowing it wasn't really smart to argue with her. He turned back toward her as soon as he was inside, peering at her legs again. His head tilted to one side, face set in a thoughtful pout. Then his face lit up, and one fist was pounded sideways into the outstretched palm of his other hand in a sign of sudden understanding.

"Oh, I get it! It's armor or something, right?"

His hands were suddenly clasped behind his head as he stood casually and grinned at her.

"Hehe... You had me worried there, I thought something was wrong. Where'd you get it in a place like this?"

She flinched at his suggestion, though it just as easily could have been a muscle twitch related to her closing the door. "From someone who isn't here," she temporized, staring at the door instead of turning around. "And these aren't armor. Properly speaking, they're called automail. One of the worlds people are taken from have an entire industry built around these kinds of mechanical prosthetic limbs ( ... )
