'Through and through'? Naruto stared at them, watching them move as Sakura walked to and sat down on her bed. Upon closer inspection, he could see the scarring underneath where the leg and metal met. So she--

As the numb shock set in, a million questions slowly rushed through his mind, like what happened and how. It was the last question that made that white, blinding shock fade to red. ...No, no, that was useless. Revenge is pointless. He'd been trying to tell Sasuke that for years, and now with Jiraiya he understood that as angry as he felt, it wouldn't change anything. Sakura's legs wouldn't magically go back to flesh and bone if he found the perpetrator and killed him.

God, he felt helpless. He wouldn't have let this happen. This would never have happened if he was there. Naruto deflated, and slowly sat on the floor and held his head in his hands. "Where ( ... )

She'd be proud of him, (and was, in a certain way), for the growth she'd already noted. That he didn't keep asking, that he didn't spout the impossible, because she'd said them to herself. She knew how to get angry on the behalf of other people. Sakura excelled at being angry on her own behalf. She could easily be selfish like that, symptomatic of most her lifetime.

What she wasn't proud of had to do with herself -- it was that she'd done something, acted in a way she'd felt was for Naruto, and it still hit and hurt him hard even when he couldn't remember. Maybe it was worse when he'd known, when he'd been there and unable to do anything in the face of Madara's ridiculous, irrational antics. No, they'd been rational, according to his idiom. Maybe it was better he didn't know any longer ( ... )
