[Jareth is...peacocking. Can owls peacock? Whatever, Jareth is strutting around pleased as punch, smiling into the camera, looking charming and nothing but proud over his fancy, almost glittery black wings. Though a curious thing is that his primary feathers are almost white.]I do hope everyone is making sense of their little gifts. Quite luxurious ( Read more... )

Actually there are a fuckton of times when honesty is not the best policy.

Yes, I have heard this sentiment before--but where I hail from, it is very much not the case.

Could you give me, perhaps, an example of when honesty would not be?

You ever hear that saying about the truth hurting? Sometimes it's better to just keep things to yourself because they would just make things more complicated if you brought them out in the open.

And I could, sure, but I don't really want to. All the examples I can come up with are personal and none of your fucking business.

Yes, I do agree.

In my kinds' culture, we believe you are not lying until you speak a lie aloud. It is the words you say that damn you, not the words you hold to your chest and keep.

So volatile, dear David. You do prefer I call you David, correct?

Surely one's tool set will vary depending on what one is attempting to achieve.

Meaning--the morality changes in turn with the agenda?

While I find the sentiment clever, and not wholly unsurprising, I wonder if this is a thought that all denizens of our current establishment possess.

Precisely.

I doubt they would put it quite as bluntly as I have nor make use of it in quite the same way that I do, but it is a method of which mortals do make use -- with all of their caveats regarding ethics and proper action, naturally, so that they can be certain their occasional little dances about the truth are done for the appropriate reasons.

Midgardian social politics certainly are curious. I believe you will find that the vast majority of them expect and indeed prefer the occasional omission or outright misleading statement, and their language is so loaded with hyperbole and peculiar metaphor that it can be at times rather difficult to sort out intended meanings. They are remarkable creatures.

I am most interested in the justification of immorality. So many are very quick to consider themselves inherently good, naturally moral--and yet such horrid things take place each day, on Earth and otherwise.

In my experience, even the worst of subjects do not consider themselves wrong, immoral--or even liars. Due to said justifications.

Though I suppose, if you know me at all, Loki--I am not only asking to wax intellectual with the most basic of minds in this establishment. Present company excluded, of course.

Honesty and twisting your words aren't the same fucking thing, asshole. [not that he isn't guilty of that himself at times

Jack's wings are a shade or two away from pure black, with flecks of white near the ends of the feathers. HEY LOOK THEY ALMOST MATCH!!! fuck you man stop cramping his style]

Why, Jack. How alike we are.

And I am well aware, of course. But I never lie. It is not a trait that I find admirable, or wonderful, or pleasant.

Words are weapons, of course. To use them, sometimes twisting is a necessary tactic.

[flipping you off]

I'd rather deal with a blatant liar than a liar who still thinks they're trustworthy. If you're just gonna twist your words half the time, then there's no fucking point in dealing with you. You care more about your own personal bullshit than anything else.

Oh, how wrong you are.

My own...personal bullshit, as it were...is not a factor, as it does not exist. I am merely asking questions. I am interested in how other beings utilize such an intriguing concept.

Like you, for example. Would you prefer brutal honesty, or gentle lies..? Or would you like me to guess...?

I...I know we haven't really spoken since you arrived here, but I just...wanted to let you know that I'm still incredibly grateful. For what you did for me. Y-you know. When we were in your kingdom. That was...really. Magnanimous of you.

[He smiles weakly.]

...I don't want to waste your time or anything, so. I mean. Th-that's all I really wanted to say. I hope you're not...suffering, or anything.

How very polite of you to thank me again, Matthew. My lands are quite treacherous, and I am truly apologetic for you running afoul of such things.

I have been faring more than well. Being more than human has it's perks, namely, I do not need to eat, or sleep...among other things.

[He pauses.]

Tell me, dear one: what is your opinion on the matter of honesty?

adashofrain December 15 2011, 21:18:46 UTC
What are we being honest about? I mean, it's not like everyone just goes around lying all the time, does it?

Reply

whatssaidissaid December 15 2011, 21:49:24 UTC
[He chuckles softly.] It is not as simple as that, dear one.

One does not have to actively speak lies to be dishonest. For example, is a person--a pony--still dishonest, if she knows something important but deigns not to tell anyone..?

Reply

adashofrain December 19 2011, 05:30:43 UTC
Well... no. Not everypony needs to know everything, even if it's important!

Reply

whatssaidissaid December 23 2011, 09:18:22 UTC
So then--by your reasoning--a lie is not a lie if it is not spoken aloud.

Correct?
