Mick Karn

With thanks to trayce for the heads-up, even though this is such terribly sad news...

One of the greatest bass players to ever walk the earth, Mick Karn has recently been diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer. Not only an amazing (fretless!)bass player, but also a gobsmackingly talented multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, sculptor and all 'round ( Read more... )

I can't tell if this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/bar_bar_ella/MickKarn93-BassPlayer-1.jpg) is from Adolescent Sex or later, I guessed later, and based on the URL, I am right.

And, not to bring you down, but you demean him by calling him a bass player.

The bass could not contain his AWESOME multi-instrumentality.

Nobody could BOOP like Mick.

Japan aside, one of my favourite Karn tracks is After A Fashion, with Midge Ure. Midge Ure! From the crapper period of Ultravox!

Yeah, in the '90s sometime methinks. No pink hair, for starters. ;) Edit: plus, that's one of 'is Wals, innit?

But... but... in MY world "bass player" is not only a noble calling, but is itself a compliment! Hah!

The frets had to go 'cos they were trying to make more room for teh AWESOME. *sage nodding*

Aye. And he gave Pete Murphy one of the few shining lights of his post-Bauhaus career 'n' all...

I hate AS. It's a Japan record I refuse to own.

Point.
(as an aside, this morning, and last night, I was jonesing some Damned songs, especially the Scabies-era. Since this news I have not found any time...)

Okay. It's on.
Everything up to and including 'Cascades' was AWESOME. Only Unshattered is bad. And that's when he found Allah.

Sorry, but we'll just have to disagree on Herr Murphy's solo career. :) I've always found some amusing (for me) parallels between Japan and Bauhaus, as I got into them both around the same time and then they both broke up around the same time and then 3/4 of both bands went on to do some really interesting and great stuff while the singers from both bands had just two (imnsho) bright spots - one their own thing (Cuts You Up in Murphy's case, Pulling Punches in Sylvian's) and the other a collab with a second scarily-talented muso (Dali's Car in Murphy's case [with Mick Karn *natch*] and the MerryXmasMrLawrence stuff in Sylvian's case). I know your mileage varies wildly from mine on this, but that all still amuses me. :D
