With thanks to
trayce for the heads-up, even though this is such terribly sad news...
One of the greatest bass players to ever walk the earth,
Mick Karn has recently been diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer. Not only an amazing (fretless!)bass player, but also a gobsmackingly talented multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, sculptor and all 'round freaky-cool human. John Taylor might've been the first bass player I sat up and took notice of, but it was Mick Karn who showed me just what the bass guitar can and should do. The bass is my favourite musical instrument because of this man.
From his
official site - "We are hoping that [Mick's] friends, fans and musical colleagues will, over the coming months, offer any support they feel capable of giving. Quite aside from the sheer brunt of daunting medically-related costs, Mick's clear and major concern is for the security and well being of his wife and young son.
"If you would like to make a donation whether as an individual or as a group, you can do so via the
paypal link ... which has been set up for this sole and express purpose. Any support you are able to give, no matter how small, could make a difference in helping Mick cope during this difficult period. His friends will be looking at a variety of ways to raise funds."
One of the first of his friends' variety of ways has come from drummer (and photographer) Steve Jansen who will donate all proceeds from the sale of any of his portraits of Mick.
Steve's ImageShop is here (and his work is almost as beautiful as Jansen himself!). This is my personal fave of Mick's sculptures - "Satchmo".
One of the beautiful portraits by Steve Jansen which you can buy! This was taken during the recording of the Tin Drum album. I can't decide (for which to get) between this one and this next one...
*sigh*
Fuck cancer in the face - it can't have this one yet! *shakes fist*
