I love the taste of a shawarmaWhether it's the chicken or the beef/lamb mixture my local place makes, seeing those thin strips of meat shaved off their rotating meat tower and briefly browned off before being placed in a warmed pita bread with a generous drizzle of sauce (tzatziki, hummus, tahini or garlic) is a treat ... and it's all delicious, ( Read more... )

There are a lot of delicious Greek foods/dishes and I've made a few of them but this one is pretty common across the entire region. It's a great take out dish.

We have a Greek festival here and I've sampled quite a few things, but none of them have inspired me to want to make them. Possibly visiting Greece this fall will fix that.

By the way, gyros is the Greek name for what they call shawarma in the Middle East. - I did not know this! Turns out I adored shawarma all along :)
