Miso soup is my 'go to' quick soup when I want a light, clean tasting soup with a flavourful broth. Although I COULD make a dashi stock with a sheet of kombu (dried salted seaweed) and katsuobushi (thinly shaved bonito flakes), I use hon-dashi powder for the convenience. Yum, I love miso soup, especially on a foggy cold January day. Wow, look at your basil! My pot outside isn't doing that well!

It hasn't been outside yet. Spent all winter on the windowsill. If I take my plants outside I don't bring them (and their buggy residents) back inside.

Ours never come in, either... :D We buy them a Home Depot and plant them. Basil, especially doesn't do well inside out house.

I have started basil from seed without any problem but then the small plants need to be transplanted cause they need a lot of soil so you can harvest the first flush of leaves and get more before the plant gets too mature and the leaves get bitter. Even pinching off the flowers to promote branching and increase leaf production doesn't help unless you've got a really big pot.

Taking my plants outside means they will get attacked by all the bugs out there ... it's just not worth it unless you're a serious gardener and I'm not. I miss that year I convinced my dad to plant some basil for me even though I only got one crop out of it.
