Picspam: End of July Leftovers and "Found" Money

Jul 31, 2014 18:05

I'm clearing out the memory card on my camera of July's pics, so I thought I'd share some meals I've enjoyed this month.

I cooked up the last steak from my freezer and the leftovers went to a couple of different meals, one a bit more elaborate than the other.

Steak and eggs with fried potatoes and hot buttered toast ... breakfast, lunch or dinner ( Read more... )

potatoes, rice, pork, seafood, beef, veggies, japanese, salmon, picspam, fish

I'd go nuts in the produce department-or at the farm market. :P

Oh! Or I'd try to find some Mangalitsa pork!

I had to look up the pork, pork which tastes like beef ... the closest producer in Ontario is near the Ontario/Quebec border. I would be more likely to go for a nice piece of sushi/sashimi grade tuna. Or just go to Red Lobster if I was going for a food item. :)

(From above): Cheese! I didn't even think of cheese!

Oh, tuna-I could do that, too. Shog makes an excellent tuna on the grill (barely seared, pretty much raw in the center, v. tasty).

You certainly have been busy in the kitchen. Your cooking is always so varied! I think I'd love the steak and eggs for a Sunday brunch. And how lovely to come into $50.00. Definitely spend it on yourself! xx http://hotlyspiced.com

Thank you. I want to make sure I use it on something special. I'm really enjoying the Paderno non-stick frying pan I bought with my Xmas/B'day gift ... maybe a Spatzle maker? So many possibilities.

I have another idea: hangover brunch ;-) Congratulations for the unexpected pay! If I wwere to buy something for the kitchen (apart from a big freezer that you already own) I would probably buy an ice-cream maker... or a new Japanese rice-cooker (I cook rice almost every day...). A good quality knife? But of course it depends on what you need and what you have. Do you have good quality teflonless (without coating) pans? Several years ago I threw out the whole lot of these and bought myself two different sizes of traditional steel frying pans (not as heavy as cast iron). Not only are they healthy, but they will last forever and food fried on them tastes 100x better than on any other pan.... especially eggs or meat. (I have also bought a traditional wok; much lighter, but also without coating). I have been advising them to every cook I know. Sissi (http://www.withaglass.com)

I've got the freezer, ice cream maker, and I cook rice perfectly well in a regular saucepan. The 2 knives I have are fine and I have a cast 9" iron frying pan and a great 9" non-stick frying pan as well as a decent enough little non-stick frying pan for how little I use it.

I discarded my wok (hadn't used it in more that 5-7 yrs) in 2010 and found that my large non-stick Lagostina saute pan works well for stir frys/pad thai and soups. My Le Creuset is great for stews and meat/spaghetti sauces.

After getting rid of stuff that was cluttering up my cupboards, I'm pretty good at using the things I kept. :)

It's hard deciding what to get. I'm visiting the food equipment place tomorrow though so who knows what I'll come home with.

Your okonomiyaki is IMPRESSIVE!!! Love the mayo technique (don't know how to call it, but I know you decorated nicely!) and oh massaman curry is my favorite!!! Drool...

Thank you. I've been playing around with a small disposable plastic bag filled with mayo which has been diluted with milk so it's squeezable, to decorate the okonomiyaki. You just cut off the corner and make circles, lines etc. It's just a fun thing to do. :)
