My Mini Nut Grinder and Rugelach (redux)

Mar 09, 2013 18:06

I have a full sized food processor so when I want to chop up or grind smaller amounts it seems like such a chore to dig it out of its spot, tucked in among a bunch of other electronic gadgets, and then have to clean it and put it back. Luckily, if you have a blender, you can adapt it to function as a mini nut chopper or spice grinder. I've also ( Read more... )

I like that idea. I have a kitchenaid blender so I have no clue if I have anything that will fit. I'll go look :)

It's a handy adaptation if your blender has the right kind of base.

I'm impressed by your inventiveness! I would never dare even thinking about such a way to use a jar. The rugelach look fantastic. Sissi (http://www.withaglass.com)

You can actually find several web sites giving this as a tip. It turns out back in the day when blenders first came out, they actually SHIPPED with a Mason jar just so that you could do this. Now I just have to wait til canning jars and lids are on sale again so that I can use small ones to grind and save my spices. :)

Thank you for your compliment but my rugelach always get misshapen during baking, unlike Eva's (darn her!!!) which are 'picture-perfect'. :) I am going to refrigerate the shaped rugelach on the next batch and put LESS filling inside. I have some cherry preserves in the pantry and want to dig into the jar.

That's one thing I missed with my new-ish kitchenaid blender is that the mason jars don't fit. My old second hand blender which I bought for $20 in 1986 from an elderly friend of my Mom's (it was already at least 10 years old) fit all kinds of mason jars, which were perfect for salad dressings and such. The much more expensive kitchenaid now sits in my pantry - I haven't used it in about 5 years. I should sell it.

The old Mason jar I used with the blender, which I THOUGH was a wide mouth, actually turned out to be a regular size while the new ones I bought recently and used for storing curd, caramel, and now mayonnaise are all wide mouth. I don't know why I found that to be hilariously funny. :)

I'm cheap frugal, and am reluctant to buy gadgets unless they're below a certain price point that I've determined I am willing to spend. My blender was less than $40. My food processor was less than $80. I
