But right now? He couldn't sleep. Watching the innocent suffer and being able to do next to nothing to save them was his worst nightmare. Accelerator could wallow in his sorrow with the best of them, but he generally tended to cope with his more serious troubles by pretending they didn't bother him. He didn't pretend they didn't exist, he'd just treat them casually; like they didn't matter at all.
But that wasn't working right now. This was not his own suffering, the kind of thing he could tell himself he deserved and pass off as normal. This was the suffering of others, and that was harder for him to deal with. Most things bored him--the apathy he made himself feel towards most things to protect himself came with a price, he supposed--but his usual choice of activity during downtime was laying around doing nothing. Staring at the ceiling, the wall. And that definitely wouldn't get his mind off of anything ( ... )

[He let out a loud, exaggerated sigh, and did his best to sound disinterested.]

[He rolled his eyes, moving his cane over slightly so he could shift his weight impatiently. A few months ago he probably would've left the kid--not his problem, after all--but he had come far enough that he couldn't ignore a child sitting all alone when something was so obviously wrong.]
