ponderings + elementary thoughts

I met up with a friend for lunch today who I haven't seen all summer. She's doing her MA at the university we both went to for our undergrad, so she started classes yesterday. We ended up walking to a coffee shop near campus and chilling there for a while. It was pretty weird. My university is right downtown, so I pass it a lot when I'm in that ( Read more... )

I still buy school supplies and I've been out of school for years now. LOL, I just call them work supplies instead. I just wish I had more use for notebooks, and folders. At work I mostly just use steno notebooks, and they're usually pretty boring.

Ugh, the procedural aspect is what is making me kind of doubtful about Elementary. I mean, I've wanted to get into Castle for years, but the procedural crime-of-the-week format is what's kind of been preventing me. I'll probably watch an episode or two of Elementary when it premieres to see if I can get into it.

Yeah I like school supply stuff but have no use for it lol. I am not buying it in grief, though.

I wouldn't usually check out a procedural but all the wank about Elementary has me interested enough to give it a shot. If there's enough emphasis on the main characters, I could see it being pretty interesting. I mean, Sherlock Holmes is always going to be something of a procedural. Sherlock is as well. That's how detective stories are. But if they keep up enough of an emotional plotline, it's not so bad.

I didn't really buy too many school supplies even when i was in school tbh. Lmao, my last semester was spent using a pad of paper for both classes and being terribly disorganized because of it, but I think that's largely a senioritis thing.

Yeah if there's enough focus on the characters/their relationship I can see it staying interesting. I really liked Holmes and Watson and their interaction in this ep, so I'm curious to see how it develops, and I think they set up both characters with plenty of future development etc to go through.

I am automatically conditioned to click on "spoilers" when you post about them, but I really want to watch Elementary! I really don't like procedural shows (the exception is The Good Wife, though I don't know how procedure-y that actually is), but I might soldier through just because I want Elementary to do well.

I took a practice LSAT last week just to give myself a direction. I do miss classes and Intellectual Talking About Things, but right now I prefer being an adult. I'd much prefer to be an adult with a job, but you know ...

LOLLLLL i am the same re: Elementary. I would likely not have ever checked it out if it weren't for the surrounding fandom wank and such, but here we are! Anyway I thought it was good. The pilot I saw was a leak, so the show doesn't air for another few weeks yet.

I think if I had a job I might not really miss school. I don't know. I don't think I missed school when I was working, but before when I was working I was only doing it for 4-month stretches, so ti's hard to say. I wish I could just be a part-time student forever because my last semester was the life, lol. Two classes I was interested in made a small enough course load that I was never particularly stressed.

LOL RIGHT? I'm all about supporting things that are Not Moffatt. It's a passive, semi-productive kind of trolling.

What's weird about school for me is that I frequently miss the academics, but at the end the environment got too much for me. I enjoyed the perks of student life that involved being on my own (getting up late, doing whatever the fuck I wanted) but was socially feeling really tired of my friend group and of Stanford in general. So when I think about school, I do wish I was still ~living the life~ and taking certain classes - I just can't imagine being back in that environment. IDK perhaps it would be different if I had gone to a different university.

I was never very involved in school which I think combines to make me a) not miss it as much as some but also b) not have enough traumatic memories to make me super relieved to be done. I don't miss the stress but I do miss the productivity and towards the end of my degree when I was finally taking classes I wanted to be taking, I liked lectures and stuff. I really liked my seminars. IDK how your school worked so I don't know if you had "seminars" or even if you did what those were like, but I quite liked them.

oh and I fully endorse doing anything that might make Steven Moffat mad somewhere.

I'm back in school now and my greatest joy right now is watching all the first years try to adapt. It's nice because they haven't discovered the best hang-out spots yet, so I get to lounge around in the comfy chairs.

I don't really like crime procedurals at all but I want Elementary to be super fabulous and popular so that the internet can shut the fuck up.

lol I was taking the bus home from downtown on Monday and I caught it at the campus stop and it was flooded with people from frosh week. GROSS TBH.

IKR. To quote someone on ONTD, I want 9 seasons, a movie, a theme park, and Elementary: Miami and Elementary: Las Vegas.

I'm finally doing the practicum part of my degree, and oddly enough don't miss classes... I know what you mean about the "responsible adult" grace period while in school though. Mine has been extended until next summer when I'm done my internship.

Elementary sounds better than I expected! I might have to check it out. If nothing else, at least it has the dubious honour of having spawned some epic wank.

Also, awesome necklace!

Yeah I did co-op and I didn't really miss class when I was working. I don't think I miss school exactly so much as I miss productiveness. And having an excuse for not having a job, lol.

Elementary was pretty good. I hope it'll do well on CBS.

Ty!
