Part 6: Dreaming

~It doesn’t matter if you get lost in a dream, she reminds herself. You’re found again as soon as you wake up.~ Emmie, Daughter of Hounds by Caitlin R. Kiernan

You remind yourself every night not to get lost in your dreams, the thrill of happiness and security not worth the pain you feel upon waking. You don’t want to become that person who lives only through dreams and forgets to experience real life. Because that would be admitting defeat and you don’t lose. Not like that.

The others have been watching you increasingly closely the last few weeks. You pretend not to notice, but they don’t really seem to care whether you do or not. Junsu had it all figured out, probably weeks ago. You hadn’t really realized it until last week, so you can’t be sure. You assume he’s told Yunho and Yoochun.

The next logical step is for them to go to Jae with the news. You figure it’s only a matter of time until everything crashes down around you, brace yourself for the confrontation. The longer the silence stretches, the more tense you become.

And it seems like the more tense you are, the more you dream. Strange. You’d always heard it was supposed to be the exact opposite. You’re not always sure what you dream about, but they’re there all the same. And you find yourself falling into what you never wanted to become: an unfulfilled dreamer. So you stop sleeping. Not completely, but mostly. Just enough to avoid slipping away into your dreams.

Junsu wakes you from a quick nap during a break from rehearsal by smacking you over the head. “Ow.” You fight off the urge to pout as you look up at him. He simply rolls his eyes and sits down next to you. “What, exactly, was that for?”

After gazing at you for a steady moment, he shakes his head. “You know, I never really though of you as an idiot. Lately, though, it seems like you’ve taken to trying to prove me wrong.” You decide not to be offended; Junsu occasionally has valid reasons behind his statements. The other times you excuse as temporary-but-recurring insanity.

“How?”

“HOW?!” He quickly whips his head around to make sure no one took notice of his shout. They probably had, but they were giving you two the courtesy of pretending they hadn’t. You try to be upset that they’re not over here defending you from-- “You’re not sleeping, Min! The others haven’t noticed yet, but I have. And if you don’t fix it, I’ll be fixing it for you.”

You blink, not aware he’d been paying such careful attention to your sleep habits. “What are you going to do, drug me?”

“If I have to, yes!” The fierce set of his face leaves no doubt in your mind that he means it. Well. That complicates your plan just the slightest degree. You wonder if you can play it off as-- “And don’t even try to pretend insomnia or something. I’m not that stupid.”

You think you should be angry at this situation, upset that he’s able to read you so easily. All you can manage to dredge up, though, is some bland form of acceptance. “Okay.”

It’s his turn to blink at you, probably expecting some kind of further explanation that you have no intention of giving. When he realizes this, his gaze morphs into a frustrated glare. “That’s it? ‘Okay.’ Just like that?”

You shrug. “What else do you want?” You don’t really mean to be difficult. Maybe you should try to match his emotional commitment to this discussion, but you can’t seem to find the motivation. So you settle for just staring back at him. His glare intensifies with your lack of response.

He breaks the stare before you, dropping his head to hide… something from you. “If that’s it, then fine.” Pulling you with him as he stands, he addresses the other three. “I’m taking Min home. He’s not feeling well.” The tightened grip on your arm prevents you from protesting. They all shoot you worried looks; you shrug and roll your eyes in Junsu’s direction. None of them argue as he drags you away. Betrayal.

Once he gets you home and settled into bed, you reluctantly admit it feels kind of nice to relax like this. Junsu sits on the floor next to your bed, his self-appointed mission to ensure you actually fall asleep. He’s talking to you, but you lost the meaning of his words a while ago. Your eyes drift close, and you think you feel fingers drifting through your hair. In that moment, you’re tempted to agree with Su; you may just be an idiot.
