Geeking

It's nice to know that the future of female geekdom in this town is secure. I tested a 16-year old today who is a HUGE Doctor Who fan. It was awesome. She says a lot of her friends from school watch it, too. It's an all-female private high school. (They're apparently very fond of Harry Potter as well ( Read more... )

YAY! That is awesome!

How did the subject of Doctor Who come up?

We finished the first set of tests, and her dad said, one down, 483 to go. I said maybe 383, and she said 42. She kind of had a geek vibe anyway, so I said, "The answer to life, the universe and everything." Which is exactly why she'd said it. She was impressed. *g* I think her dad mentioned Doctor Who first. And then we left him in the dust because he's apparently only a casual fan!

It was fun! He was just kind of bemused at us. It was fun to watch them together--they're clearly close.

Aww! That's so cute! Good for them, I say. Doctor Who lives on! *cheers*

In regards to your comment above about life, the universe and everything, I really enjoy subtly letting Hitchhiker's Guide quotes slip in front of people I don't know, just to see who picks up on them. When recognition hits, the moment is priceless!

It is cute, and your icon is perfect!

Those little moments of fellow-geek recognition are AWESOME.

In related news, this is my new favorite quote:

"…because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’."

Thanks! That icon's one of my favorites! The Big Bang Theory is such a guilty pleasure for me, heh. I'm all for nerdy, brightly-colored shows.

That is a great quote! Baha, what a great point. It really would look rather ridiculous to yell at someone, "YOU LIKE STUFF!!" and expect them to take offense at it. Though that could be funny to see. *G*

Who is John Green?

It could be funny!

I just saw the quote somewhere and had to look him up. He's an author: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_tc_2_0?rh=i%3Astripbooks%2Ck%3AJohn+Green&keywords=John+Green&ie=UTF8&qid=1314934439&sr=8-2-ent&field-contributor_id=B001I9OQNE

...This seems like a good time to put him on my "check the library" list.

Win! I'm feeling more positive about the future already. :) I'm sure she was as happy about the encounter as you were.

She didn't want to leave! Although she DID want to be done with her test. I don't blame her--parts of it are not pleasant. She was very cooperative, though. And hung around a little afterward so we could finish a fannish discussion.
