Have had this hanging over my head for a few weeks now: Do I join the U of M Monday night band? I missed the auditions, but the director called me a few days before them and asked me to come out and offered to make special arrangements if I couldn't make it to the auditions ( Read more... )

damn you for making it radial circles! If it were ticky boxes, every single one would be checked since they're all true in some way.

in other words, I don't know.

they're all true in some way

Because they're all the thoughts I had while writing the poll!

So confusing!

Totally unrelated to the poll, but who's the director? Is the Monday night band the concert band with Connie Turner?

And if you miss music and making music as much as I do, you should go. But maybe on a different night-- I'm sure there are more than a couple of bands around, even throughout different communities that you could join.

The director's Fraser Linklater now. Some problems with budget made it necessary for Connie to leave or something. He tried explaining it to me, but it really wasn't any of my business.

Were you in Connie's band?

Nope. But I used to be in that circle... Fraser tried recruiting me and a couple of people from our highschool band back in the day. Connie Turner's a nice lady... Linklater can be a bit of an ass. He used to be responsible for the Wind Ensemble only, and Connie did concert band. I was under the impression that concert band wasn't quite as good as Wind, but at least people enjoyed it.

I played in Connie's band for three years after high school, and auditioned for Fraser's Wind Ensemble a few times, but never quite made it in.

I was under the impression that concert band wasn't quite as good as Wind, but at least people enjoyed it.

I'd say that was a pretty accurate assessment, although I got tired of playing after a couple years. It was hard to make the commitment to it when I had so much other work to do, and a lot of the music got to be the same over time.

If you think it might be a relaxing or fun thing, then go for it. But if it's just something else to stress about, if it were me, I'd forget about it. In 2nd year, I had a 10am-10pm day for a term and I dreaded those days, even if the classes themselves were okay.

Hey. Did the poll but wanted to say that I understand the desire to do something you miss and it was very cool the director personally wants you you be there. However, I remember my college days when I committed to EVERYTHING asked of me and I ended up have to cut a lot of things out of my schedule just to survive. I think it would be a bummer if you joined, discovered it was too much, had to quit, and then felt guilty about it. The main thing is to always take care of yourself and havin' that kind of a Monday schedule probly wouldn't be good for that.
