After the US election two years ago, this is what I had to say:

I really feel that this outcome will mean that America and the world will be worse off in four years, just like we're worse off today than we were four years ago. How much worse? Well, that depends on how much the American public is willing to put up with.
I guess we have our answer: ( Read more... )

Hey, thanks for calling every American an ignorant dumbass! That's what I like to see.

I can't tell if you're being serious, but anyone who isn't worried about this needs a reality check.

I actually thought it was pretty clear that I was being sarcastic--I think that for every ignorant person you hear on the news who things building a fence at the Mexican border is the best idea ever, there's another person or, according to recent poll numbers, two or three people, who are crying themselves to sleep at night. Maybe you don't understand the way the political system really works here--there's not much we can do between elections. Mid-term elections are this November so there's hope for change there, but you're wasting your time looking for an impeachment or anything like that because Congress and the House are both Republican-controlled. I take offense at the statement that we're barely blinking an eye. I guess you don't really read or hear any liberal-minded news. But if that's really what you think, then, hey, carry on with the lectures from afar. You're really changing the world!!

I guess the reason I was confused was because I didn't think your comment jived well with my post. I did not call Americans dumbasses, a dumbass would be someone knowing about what's happened and still not doing anything. I'll cop to the ignorant thing, but then again I haven't really seen anything to indicate otherwise, not in the grand scheme of things.

I know perfectly well how your political system works, but here's the thing, if opposition for a president undermining the constitution that your country was founded on comes down to party lines, then the public really must have elected the wrong people to represent them. It isn't like these people who voted for this bill were appointed by Bush himself, the people put them in power.

The only people I've seen reacting strongly to this bill being passed are the people on my flist and the liberal blogs I've read. I've seen no indication that the vast majority of the American public even knows what's happened. Or, if they know, that they realize why it's so bad.

I only read liberal ( ... )

Right above where it says "LJ notifications" is where you can change how you view your comment pages.

Right above is the "View comment pages in your own journal style" option, which adds the ?style=mine to any LJ URL unless I'm mistaken. That's not what I'm looking for. Quite the opposite, in fact.

It's sad that I have to agree. I'm not surprised though. The country has been rammed up the ass ever since this guy came into power, so this isn't necessarily shocking in any way.

and you need to watch Gilmore Girls and post thoughts about it. I can't go on without reviews from you!

I'm not going to watch GG, sorry. I might marathon the episodes later on if things improve, but it's going to take some convincing for me to return after they basically ruined Lorelai for me last year. I hear the characterization was better in the first episode, but that's not saying much.

That's terrible. I hear Lor may have a breakdown with the second episode. *Hopes*

At least I have your BSG comments to look forward to.

I know. I'm an American, and honestly? In general no one is doing anything. I don't even think most people know about that over here. Which is pathetic, sad, and many other similar and harsher sounding adjectives.

Then there are those who have signed online protests which were sent to senators and other government officials. That's what I've done. It isn't much, but it's still something…

I usually classify Bush as immoral, not evil, and I do so in this case too. Well, underhanded, sadistic and unfeeling too, but not outright evil. The problem here, as I see it, isn't that people will be snatched off the streets and tortured tomorrow, it's that this law will be there until it's voted out of existence, which means that the next president or the next president or the next president can really screw up the US beyond repair.

The founding fathers fought and died for the rights that the American people just signed away. Rights that have existed since the 14th century. So we're back in the Middle Ages, is that it?

Would you mind linking to those petitions? I'd like to feel like I'm at least doing something.

The ones I did were through my college. I tried searching for another one to find for you, but I am not having any luck. And that just annoys me even more. Why don't people care about this? The one through my school is a password locked one for students only, so that won't be able to help you. If I find another, I'll be sure to let you know.

It's not there for me, but I think I found it anyway.

Considering what happened in the last election I'm not holding my breath, I'm just thanking my lucky stars that I don't have to live in that country anymore. Which is kind of sad, because I used to actually think I'd return one day, but these days I can't even imagine visiting.
