'Tis the season to be kerfuffling

Can you tell fandom is getting bored? If you can't, you're probably not a part of the Buffy, VM or Office fandoms.

Since the Buffy thing seems to be mainly one guy not wanting others to have, you know, opinions, I've talked about KB's latest remarks elsewhere and read TWoP (TWoP, for crying out loud!) for the latest in Office fandom stupidity, I ( Read more... )

Heh, I haven't heard about this Buffy guy.

So far, every time they've tried to portray a romantic relationship on this show, it has sucked.
Which is odd because Cupid was impressive in its array of compelling portrayals.

I linked him in my LJ. He's a het-only Xander fan who got traumatized because a fanfic convention full of women had (GASP) Teh Gay in some otherwise innocuous grammar examples. And then there's the action figure movie, which also traumatized him with the clothed plastic boyparts being next to each other. It's hilarious wank. :)

The Buffy guy attended WriterCon and wrote a post in the community afterwards about how scandalous it was that they discussed slash. So basically it's the yearly slash kerfuffle.

I think Cupid did a good job with Trevor and Claire, but let's face it, the rest of them were couples we only saw once, and sure, they were able to sustain it for one entire episode, but would any of those relationships have been interesting if we'd continued watching?

See, I would love to have Veronica date either Troy or Mac in college. (Granted, neither is likely, but still.) I prefer her and Logan to have an undercurrent of tension but not actually date, since sappy relationships are boring (and you're right - this show brings the boring in existing 'ships).

Plus, that leaves Logan free to get it on with Weevil (perhaps with Veronica jumping in), and there is no bad there. ;)

As for Jim/Pam - couldn't they just go back to normal, but with the immense awkwardness? I forget if he actually said he was going to leave. (Only watched it once.)

I'd actually prefer it if Veronica was single, only dating casually, because of the aforementioned suckage. And I'd like Logan's and Veronica's relationship to be much like it was post-Donut Run. Lots of tension and flirting, but with less vitriol than earlier on in the season.

I don't really get Logan/Weevil, but hey, that can be your wish. ;-)

The thing is that Pam is getting married, so something has to give somewhere. And it's the reason Jim accepted the Stamford job (he said yes to Jan, but instead of telling Pam about it he shocked us all to hell and told her he was in love with her).

Yes, exactly. That would be perfect.

And ah, right. I remember "Casino Night" now. Hmm, I don't want to lose their interaction either. Maybe Pam will shock us all and go off to NYC for that art training thing, and Roy will call it quits...?

While I really like the idea of Pam choosing herself over a guy, I'm not sure how that would work in the context of the show. I mean, she wouldn't be the receptionist anymore so there'd be no interaction at all between her and Jim. Unless she's hired on as the resident graphics designer, but really, they sell paper. How could that even be fanwanked? (Actually, I just thought of a way. The branches are merged and the is big enough to warrant a graphics designer for company stationery design and stuff like that. But it still seems to be a bit of a stretch.)

HA. I do believe this is the first time I've completely agreed with a post of yours but...YES. A big wholehearted YES on both accounts ( ... )

I don't understand why they always make relationships that have so many inherent issues and reasons for conflict sugar-sweet and boring until the inevitable new thing happens to tear the couple apart. They've created characters that are so rich, but as soon as their relationships turn romantic, it's like they don't even care about that. Fine, then don't put people in relationships if you're not even interested in writing about it.

See, I love Casino Night in that limited setting. Both the declaration of love and the kiss. It's just that when I think about what's next I can't think of a single scenario that won't be bad for the show in the long run.

Well, that's just the thing. LgV is a rare ship that has SO many inherent issues already built in between them, so much so you wouldn't need to add any other new conflict and you'd still have material for years. But Rob doesn't seem to be seeing...well, ANY of it. And this little history amnesia thing it looks like they'll be applying this season so new viewers don't feel left out...doesn't make things look any better.

And really, as much as I love all my ships, of past and present, the one thing I've always seen is just how much my love for (at least) one of the characters is always somehow lessened because of the two characters becoming a full-blown ship. And it never makes any sense why that always has to happen, but it does. Rich characterization seems to always be sacrificed. And sometimes even blatant character destruction before the end. I REALLY don't want to see that happen to this ship. But I'm afraid it's completely in the cards...

You know, that's just the thing, isn't it? I'd *love* to see a real relationship between Logan and Veronica, but I don't think it will play out the way I'd want to see it. At the time, I was totally into their relationship at the end of S1, mostly because I'd fanwanked it all to hell the same way you did, but I knew the whole time that it was all going to blow up spectacularly in their faces, and I expected the fallout to be good. And obviously, it wasn't. I just don't think the show can/will deliver, so I'd rather they didn't ruin my 'ship completely, you know? I'm happy over here in fic-land ( ... )

I don't even mind seeing a bad relationship between Logan and Veronica, but I don't want to see an empty relationship between them, and I have absolutely no faith in the writers giving me what I want. I'm so with you on not wanting them to ruin my 'ship, and I'm perfectly happy reading fic till the end of time rather than watching something unsatisfactory on-screen.

My issue with The Office really doesn't have much to do with the scenes in the episode, because they were great, it's that things have changed irrevocably and I don't know where they can take the show from here.

Pam staying with Roy for any length of time will make lose respect for her, much like I did for Dawn. I tend to be harder on Pam too, but it's mainly because at least Jim is willing to admit to his feelings while Pam represses. And really, for no good reason other than the safety of hers and Roy's relationship.

My two favorite periods in their relationship have been mid to late season 1 and late season 2, when there's a push and pull between them, when there's tension.

This is actually part of why I wasn't all that happy when they went all happy and sweet and together at the end of season 2. -_- It was a bit of out of character, and IMHO, if they were to get together, they shouldn't forget to skip out the part where they smooth out things because hello? Major issues between the two of them! I would have rather they just played out the tension through at the very least the beginning of season 3 before putting them back together. Because its the sudden get-together that makes them seem pods when together.

Plus I wasn't really all that convinced with the V/D break-up. o_o

But who knows? I'm still hoping the 'ship pulls through during season 2. Really really hoping.

I tend to think of their hallway make-out session the same way as I think of their relationship at the end of season 1 - they just want to be happy and not hurt each other for five seconds, especially since Veronica is leaving and there's no point starting something right then because they'll never be able to finish it before she jets off and they're separated for a week with all these issues hanging out in the open ( ... )
