Well, yeah, people like it, but there have been complaints. Like, it's too slow getting off the ground, the female characters aren't fully developed (though that's no surprise, it is Sorkin, after all), pacing is off and so and so on.
I really do believe that these screeners are released on purpose to generate buzz, and when you've got the show with the biggest buzz already, and the reactions aren't exactly great, I can understand them not wanting to release it.
I do think that Studio 60 will be good, but I also think it's far from the kind of show that will be an overnight sensation. Sorkin's shows are all about the writing and the characters, and that's not something that comes across as readily as, for example, special effects or a gimmicky premise.
One thing that really surprised me was Milo's non-flying at the end. I wonder if he'll turn out to have some other power instead? Maybe prophetic dreams, sort of like the painter?
I just finished watching, and that surprised me, too. Nice twist! Overall I enjoyed the pilot a lot -- great production values and acting. I really like that the special powers aren't necessarily a good thing -- like the stripper's murderous alter ego. Intriguing!
Although they didn't have all the characters yet, at least not in the version I saw. Greg Grunberg and the prison inmate were MIA.
I'm wondering how Niki's evil reflection is a genetic power. But it is cool that it's not a good thing. And I love how freaked out Claire is about being invulnerable. It reminds me of Phil trying to kill himself in Groundhog Day.
Ha. Perfect timing, as I just watched the Heroes screener, and I agree with you. I love the scope and ambition too. It's trying to be something special, and I admire that, and although it has the potential to backfire if they push too hard, they seem restrained enough here.
The ending twist was fucking sweet. I hope that doesn't get spoiled for people because it was a fantastic ending, and it really left me wanting more.
I'd rather see a show that pushes the envelope and fails than one that plays it safe and succeeds, because when someone goes out on a limb and does something different it can be the best thing ever. And then the next season it'll be copied by five new shows, but hey, that's how the game is played. I think the biggest reason I liked Heroes so much was because it was different from every other show out there that I've seen so far.
When I first heard about Heroes, it sounded very similar to The 4400 (which itself has been compared to X-Men and Rising Stars, so I'm not saying it's a bastion of originality either), but the look and style of the show is so very different. It's not as fantastical; it's grittier. I appreciate The 4400 for taking the realistic approach, and they've been moving toward it in the past couple seasons with the arc, but they've still got the fact that people from the future abducted folks from across the timeline in order to stop some Catastrophe, and it adds an element of WTF to the whole thing.
In contrast, the dude's painting on the floor along with his comment of "We have to stop it" gave me chills.
What's Traveler? I don't think I'd heard much about it. The Nine looked interesting, if only for the gimmick. Gimmicks are in these days. But I am a sucker for gimmicks, so.
I only watched the first few episodes of The 4400, it just didn't grab me, but I'm surprised by the X-Men comparisons because it didn't seem that way at all to me.
Traveler is about three guys who just graduated from Yale who set off on a road trip. Their first stop is New York, and their trip comes to an abrupt halt when there's a terrorist attack and they become suspects. I love the conspiracy element of it, and the premise was really intriguing. I didn't know a thing about it, so the attack came as sort of a surprise, which I think might have worked in my favor because it was so unexpected.
