san francisco is the only one of those cities that i went to, and you'd only need a couple of days there. you can cover the main attractions pretty quickly if you want to, but it's a pretty good city to hang out and drink and eat and take heaps of photos of boats. heh.

umm. there's a big wharf, with lots of tourists and stalls that sell seafood - named, by pure chance, "fisherman's wharf". there's lombard street, which is in about every second movie ever made, which is the super steep winding street. that's irrelevant, but interesting. there's little satellite cities like oakland, with lots of students, therefore good bookshops etc. there's alcatraz, the old prison on an island, where you can take tours (book in advance). there's a fabulously tacky chinatown, lots of nice places on the harbour, cold and windy weather (even in summer), and good shopping. that's what i best remember right now.
oh, and a really good rail system. :)

EXPLAIN FURTHER

1) what's bad about greyhound ?
2) full ? 5 and a half cities ... is that too much, COME ON ?

i was in a greyhound bus terminal once, and i really feared for my safety. maybe things are different in the northwest of the country, but it seemed like a frightening place. glad to be out of there asap

and i know you've already done the oklahoma to ny thing, but i think 5 cities is a lot... you already know this, i'm sure, but america's a pretty big place

well, yeah 5 is a lot, but i'll only be doing 1 or 2 days in some .. and the travel time between most of them is small, right ?

wtf, why are you going to olympia?

use southwest.com for flying around the west coast. cheap cheap.

a couple days in seattle, forget olympia, a day or so in portland (say hi to my mom!) and as much time as you can spend in SF. forget LA.

Olympia would be good to drop by for the night, lots of musos, we saw lots of people hanging outside firestations where impromptu gigs happen.

TOO days in Seattle will be enough if not TWO much. Portland has great music shops. San Fran is beauitful and you will love how shit Height Ashbury is (Like carnaby street in London - commercialising an era that was against exactly that). The instrument shops and record shops are cool, we walked into a music shop and the guy behind the counter had a hood on so we couldn see his face. We asked about records and he led us downstairs where there were 50,000 records, he stared at us from the corner - say hi to him for us if you go there.

I have also heard nightmarish stories about the buses. Worst one was when a guy called Freddie jumped on with knives on the end of his fingers... hang onm that was a movie. LA was great and i hate all that shite. I even enjoyed the famous peoples home tour.

Say hi to Meri from Caz and I, she rocks.
