I read the newest of the translated Vampire Hunter D books yesterday. This one's my favorite yet and I'm sure the books are improving. The characters are getting more rounded out and it's now been two books since anyone got raped or was even in danger of it. I've read Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quartet way back in fifth grade or so. I've almost completely forgotten them. I remember that Many Waters about the twins going back to Noah's time was my favorite. I'm glad I took Bryce's advice and read Lord of Darkness (although it would be better named 'My Sexual Exploits in Africa') by Robert Silverberg. I'm going to have to look up the real Andrew Battell's memoir. I know all the sex is made up by Silverberg, and I'm curious what all was true ( Read more... )

So, Bryce recommended that I read his favorite Robert Silverberg book, Lord of Darkness. It's based off the sketchy memoir of Andrew Battell (the most recent reprint is The Strange Adventure of Andrew Battell, 1901), who was on an English privateer ship in 1589, captured by Portugals, and shipped to Africa where he had 20 years of adventures.
