Shay has just finished her shift and wants to curl up in bed and read or maybe sleep. She's not so sure about the sleep thing. She'll probably just read. She's changed into sweatpants and a tank top and is trying to choose a book to read. She's torn between How the Irish Saved Civilization and something by Carol Shields that's probably depressing.

OK, history it is. She doesn't understand most fiction anyway. It's all brooding. And science fiction is a little too much like her life.

Ted knocks on Shay's door and nervously wonders if he should have brought flowers or chocolates or a shiny piece of tin foil.

Shay answers the door and gives Ted a brief, kind of tired-looking smile. Still, it's a smile. Which is pretty darn rare.

"Hi," she says. "Come on in. What brings you here today?"

Ted comes very close to hugging her or kissing her or fainting because suddenly he's so nervous he can't move. "Hi."

He manages what has got to be a truly ghastly smile and forces himself to at least walk a few steps into the apartment.

"Um. It's complicated."
