Between Vic and Sue, well, Ted decides he deserves a break. He leaves five jars of peanut butter on the kitchen table with a note that says:

Have to see someone. Back soon. Sorry. If you have to, you have my permission to use my computer if Gotham tells you you should or whatever. I'll be back and then if you want, I'll explain as much as I can.
Don't leave through any windows. Don't jump through any windows. Don't even think about breaking anything made of glass.

Then he powers up the Bug and heads off to Chicago. If he has to do stupid things for the good of the world, he's damn well doing something selfish.
