I intended to post this last October but it wasn't finished yet. Better shockingly late than never, right?

At a word of command the horses break into a gentle trot, their necks stretched eagerly toward the heart of the desert. Louvier stands unmoving and watches until their outlines begin to blur in the haze of heat already rising from the dunes. Suddenly the diminishing silhouettes pause, merge, and shift apart again; Aroui has halted at the crest of a hill and turned around for one final look. Louvier’s heart stutters as he raises a hand in farewell. Dimly he can see Aroui mirror the salute before wheeling the horses again and in the next minute there is nothing on the horizon but the glare of sun on sand ( ... )

This is an amazing gift--thank you. The end and the epilogue made me cry, even though I knew what would happen. But the slow buildup was delicious, not overly obvious or unnatural. You provided just enough glimpses into what had happened to the company that I wanted to know more yet wasn't disappointed not knowing. It kept the focus on the remaining characters--and kudos for actually giving Michel a personality--and the story unfolding between them ( ... )
