I intended to post this last October but it wasn't finished yet. Better shockingly late than never, right?

Anyway around two years ago left_sider and I stumbled across news about Cyril Raffaelli's latest film, Djinns, a.k.a. Stranded. There was a minor Flailing Incident when we discovered that Cyril would be sporting period military gear, and then a major ( Read more... )

This is an amazing gift--thank you. The end and the epilogue made me cry, even though I knew what would happen. But the slow buildup was delicious, not overly obvious or unnatural. You provided just enough glimpses into what had happened to the company that I wanted to know more yet wasn't disappointed not knowing. It kept the focus on the remaining characters--and kudos for actually giving Michel a personality--and the story unfolding between them.

I was going to quote favourite passages but there are too many. The language is lovely and extremely evocative (and I'm not just referring to Aroui speaking Arabic *fans self*). The descriptions of the desert and the pervading tone of danger and mystery are very well done. Whatever fudging you did on the Imazighen, the culture feels real, as does Louvier's interest in it. But oh, the horses! *sob*

Best part has to be the love story, though. Because even if these two don't really know each other, even if they're from totally alien worlds, it is clear they *know* each other.

Bottom line, I would have watched the shit out of this if it were the real movie. Tant pis pour nous!
