Chapter 32: Trouble

Ville strolled down the road towards Bam's house with a smile on his face and a bounce in his step. He'd woken early that morning - which was strange considering it was a Saturday - and decided that he would go and visit his boyfriend. His smile widened into a grin as he thought of Bam. He turned the corner into a new street and stopped dead when he saw Jason and Gavin just ahead of him. Jason had Gavin up against a wall, and from Gavin's expression, Ville knew it wasn't something he was enjoying. He slowly slid back around the corner, peering around it at the two boys.

"…if you don't do it, there will be trouble." He heard Jason growl.

"I think you've completely lost your mind." Came Gavin's response. Ville frowned, and wished he knew what they were talking about. "I don't want any part in this."

"Tough shit Gavin, you're involved already." Jason's voice was dark, and it sent a shiver up Ville's spine. "You became involved when you agreed to date me."

"Then maybe I don't want to date you anymore." Ville winced as he heard a sickening crack and Gavin's sharp cry of pain.

"It's too late for that now, Gavin. Far too late." Ville leant flat against the wall, caught between walking around the corner and confronting Jason, or phoning for help. He knew the tone of Jason's voice wasn't good - he'd heard both Carter and Alex use it before, and he knew it could mean danger for Gavin. Sure, the little blonde was a bully, but he'd never really hurt anyone before. He certainly didn't deserve to be threatened like that. He dug his hand into his jeans pocket, reaching for his phone and pulling it out. He flipped it open and was about to dial when a shadow fell over him.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Ville looked up to meet dark grey eyes. He spotted the scarred cheek and knew instantly that this was Jackson, Jason's older brother. "I think that would be a very bad idea." Jackson leant down so that his face was level with Ville's, and smirked. "I don't think my little brother would like you phoning for help, Valo." Ville's blood ran cold. How did Jackson know his name? "In fact, I don't think he'd like that you were listening to his conversation. Do you want to find out? I'm sure Gavin would appreciate the distraction. Maybe Jason could let out his anger and frustration on you instead." Ville slowly lowered the hand holding his phone, trying to remember who was on his speed dial. He pressed a number at random and dialled, hoping it was someone who would be able to help.

Alex stared at her cell phone as the screen lit up and her ringtone began playing loudly. She reached over and picked it up, checking the caller ID. Frowning, she answered.

"Ville?" There was no response from the other line, but she could hear breathing and what she assumed was shuffling in the background. "Ville… everything alright?" She didn't know why she lowered her voice, but it seemed appropriate. She strained hard to listen for any other sounds in the background, and then she heard it.

"… I should throw you to Jason right now, that ought to teach you a lesson." She knew the voice. Knew it very well. "Maybe you should have stayed in Finland." She ended the call instantly and bolted from the room and down the stairs, nearly knocking her father over.

"Whoa, Alex… ease up, girl. What's the rush?" Dave laughed, putting his hands on her shoulders.

"Where's Ville?" She demanded sharply. He blinked in surprise before shrugging.

"He left an hour ago. I think he said he was going to Bam's." She shot past him and grabbed a set of keys from the hooks beside the front door.

"I'm borrowing your car." She told Dave whilst opening the door. Dave smirked.

"Alright." Just as the door was closing, he spun around, realizing what she'd just said. "Wait, Alex! You can't drive!" But she was already in the car and starting up the engine. "Oh shit. Katri is going to kill me."

Alex sped along the road, swerving around the other cars and ignoring the shouts of protest from the drivers. She had to find Ville before… She didn't want to think about it. She was just glad that Ville only knew one way to Bam's house. She slammed on the brakes and pulled up against the side of the road when she spotted Ville on the street corner, backed up against the wall. She leapt out of the car in an instant and bolted towards the man looming over him, and full-on tackled him to the ground. Ville stared in shock as Jackson hit the floor with a dull thud, Alex hovering over him, one fist raised.

"I told you to stay away from my fucking family!" She hissed at him. Jackson snarled at her from the floor and attempted to push her off, but her other hand was grasped around his throat, and she tightened her grip, daring him to try again. "Was last time not warning enough, Daniels? Or have you forgotten it? I won't mind jogging your memory a little." There were rushed footsteps and Ville looked up from the scene on the floor as Jason and Gavin turned the corner and stopped dead when they saw what was going on. Gavin stared at Alex in surprise, and then looked up to Ville, who was still standing against the wall with his phone in his hand.

"I didn't know he was your family." Jackson choked out. Alex growled dangerously.

"Bullshit. You've been following my boys around for a while, and I'm sure your psycho little brother has told you all about Ville." Jason's fists clenched, but he made no move to help his brother. Gavin backed away slowly, and Ville believed he was going to make a run for it, but then Jason fixed his cold gaze on the blonde, and Gavin froze. Alex leant down so that her face was only about an inch from Jackson's. "I'm going to give you one last chance. Come near either of them again, and I will carry out that promise." She stared him down for a moment before getting up; leaving him sprawled on the floor. "Come on Ville, I'll take you to Bam's." Ville followed her over to Dave's car, not bothering to wonder how she had driven it here. He was just glad that she had turned up.

"Thanks Alex." He wanted to question her about the things she'd said to Jackson, but she was in a foul mood and he didn't want to make it worse.

"Don't thank me. Thank speed dial." She murmured. "You're just lucky it was me you called and not Craig." Ville smiled.

"I didn't even know who I'd called. I just pressed a button at random and hoped it was someone who could help." Alex didn't smile. Her face remained expressionless as she turned onto Bam's street.

"Don't tell anyone about what just happened, Ville, especially Craig. There's a long story behind Jackson and the events that happened with Jason and Craig, which I'll explain to you another time, but it's important that Craig doesn't hear about Jackson. Don't tell Bam, because Bam can't keep his mouth shut. I'll talk to Jude when I get home." He nodded along, feeling uncomfortable in the tense atmosphere. His mind wandered back to Gavin and Jason, and he pondered about whether to bring up the conversation he'd overheard. He quickly decided against it. Maybe he would mention it later, when she wasn't so riled up.

He was glad when she pulled up outside Bam's house and he got out of the car. It wasn't going to be easy pretending nothing had happened, but he was sure he could manage it. Besides, Bam would probably do a good job at taking his mind off it. He watched Alex drive off and sighed. He was curious as to what had happened with Jackson in the past, but he knew he wouldn't find out until Alex wanted to tell him. And now, for some reason, he was more curious as to how Jackson received that scar on his face.

When Alex returned home, Dave was sat on the front step, anxiously awaiting her return. He jumped to his feet when she pulled up and switched off the engine. He quickly checked the car for any damages, and then did the same thing for Alex when she got out of the car. She strolled up to him casually and dropped his keys into his hand without saying a word. Dave turned and watched her disappear into the house with a worried smile.

"Hey Alex, dad said you were in a bit of a rush earlier, what's up?" Craig asked her when she walked into the lounge. Craig was sprawled on the sofa, his head in Jude's lap. Jude barely acknowledged her presence - he was enthralled in the TV, which was playing some action thriller movie.

"Nothing. A friend needed some help, that's all." Craig frowned.

"Help that required you to borrow dad's car even though you don't have a license and so in theory shouldn't be able to drive?" Alex rolled her eyes.

"It was an emergency." She said nothing more on the subject and walked through the house to the back yard, where she sat among the dogs, her mind focused on Jackson Daniels. Looking back at the house briefly, she jogged down to the bottom of the yard and slipped through a gate, beyond which lay a tangle of branches and plants that could easily be mistaken for part of a jungle. She slipped through them all with an ease born of practice, and dropped down into a small clearing. Above her, the branches and plants were woven together to form a makeshift roof, and only the barest hints of sunlight shone through. This was the Hudson Den, a secret hideout she and Craig had built when they were younger and still used their wild imaginations to form new and exciting games. This place had been used as a military base, a Secret Service hideout, a dragon's cave… and so much more. As they got older, it had become a spot for their friends to hide until their parents were asleep, and then the drinking would begin. But for the majority of the time, it was her den, since Craig never really used it anymore. Katri and Dave didn't even know it existed.

There were a few chairs around the edge of the den, most of them old and falling apart, and a filing cabinet that they had moved down here without their parents knowing, to be used as a place to hide things they didn't want their parents to find in their rooms. One large drawer belonged to Craig, and had once been full of magazines full of half-naked men - until he came out, of course. Now they lived in his room. The other drawer was hers.

She took off one steel-plated boot and reached inside, finding the small tear in the lining and pulling out a key that had seen better days. Slipping her boot back on, she unlocked her drawer and searched through the dividers, looking for a specific one. Unlike Craig, she had kept her drawer neat and organized, with dividers and folders for everything she kept in there. She located the file she wanted right at the back of the drawer, and pulled it out, sitting on the earthy floor of the den and opening the file, spreading it out in front of her.

On the very top were newspaper clippings of various headlines - most of them revolving around the incident between Jason and Craig. She put these to one side, not interested in the words she had read a thousand times. Beneath the newspaper headlines was a full news story, and this she picked up. She read the headline with a slight smirk. Boy Saved By Mysterious Rescuer. She remembered this all too clearly. The rescuer wasn't quite so mysterious if anybody really thought about it. This story had been in the paper about four days after the events that happened with Craig, Jason and Jackson. If anyone bothered to think clearly, and if people didn't naturally assume that the rescuer was male, it was quite obvious who it was.

There was a picture beneath the story of a very familiar face. The young man was stood between two police officers, scowling at the camera. Standing out sharply on his face was a long, thin wound. The caption read: Jackson Daniels, the man who never saw it coming. She traced the angry red wound with one finger and smirked.

"I did it once, Jackson. I'll do it again." She murmured. She set the news story down beside her and returned to the rest of the papers in the file. She had spent the last two years tracking the Daniels family wherever they went, making sure they didn't come anywhere near Craig again. She had followed Jackson's arrest, and fumed over the small amount of time they sentenced him to. She had read up on Jason's caution and knew that he couldn't go within a five-mile radius of their house for a year. Of course, that year had passed now, and unless they had a good reason to renew that rule, Jason could come and go as he pleased. She had followed Jackson's release, too, and even discovered that the Daniels family was moving back to their side of town. She hadn't mentioned it to Craig in the hopes that Jason would be sent to a different school, but of course it hadn't quite worked out like that. She knew that her family would be concerned if they knew what she'd been doing for the past two years, and so she pretended to be as shocked as everyone else when Jason returned to their school.

She'd even hoped that Jackson would keep his distance from their family, but it appeared that he wasn't going to do anything of the sort. When she'd spotted him watching them in the mall, she'd assumed he was after Craig again - and he still could be, she wasn't sure what was going on in his head after all - but after today she knew she had to keep an eye on Ville, too. She pulled out a notebook and a pen, and quickly noted down everything that had happened earlier, including the appearance of Jason and Gavin. She also noted that there had been fear in Gavin's eyes, but she wasn't sure if that was because of the scene that had been unfolding in front of him, or because of something else.

Once her notes were done, she gathered up the stack of papers she had put aside - including the news story - and put everything else back in the file, and back into the drawer. She locked it again and replaced the key before picking up the papers and folding them. She lifted her shirt at the back and tucked the papers underneath the waistband of her jeans, pulling her shirt back down over them once they were settled comfortably. She would need the evidence when she explained everything to Ville later. Her next task was to get Jude alone to tell him that Jackson was still a threat to Craig. Of course, prising Craig off Jude was going to be the hardest part.

She made her way back into the yard and slipped into the house with barely a sound. Judging from the noise from the lounge, the film was still in full swing. She guessed she had about an hour before she would get a chance to talk to Jude alone. That gave her an hour to work out how exactly she was going to tell Ville everything. She made her way to her room and sat there in the dark, her thoughts still focused on Jackson Daniels.

"One last chance, Jackson. I haven't forgotten our promise." She murmured to herself. Absentmindedly, she picked up a blade and began playing with it, turning it over in her hands and running her fingers along the cool steel. She briefly wondered if she should call Ville and ask him to phone when he was planning on leaving Bam's, just so she could keep an eye on him, but quickly decided against it. Jackson may not be entirely clever, but he wasn't stupid, either. He wouldn't try and attack Ville again for a while, not after what happened earlier. But he would do it again. He didn't learn. "I guess I didn't teach him a good enough lesson last time."

She'd have to teach him a better one next time.

Hope you all liked chapter 32! Hopefully I'll be able to stick with this update routine and get another chapter out next Friday! Remember, comments are what keep me going =P
