Authors Notes: I'm still pulling this story together, so hopefully it will work well with me posting it before its done. I've only rewritten this story like... eight times...
It was raining hard when Ryan pulled into the driveway. His heart was pounding in his chest since he didn’t know what was going on. The sight of her standing on the side of the road didn’t help matters as he slowed to a stop. She hurried to the passenger side, her face full of fear and sadness. “Are you alright?”
Katri slid into the car, quickly folding her umbrella so she could close the door. She shook her head, cheeks flushed as she struggled against the tears that wanted to pour. He could see the way she trembled, which broke Ryan’s heart. “No.”
Ryan turned his car off and turned to face her as best as possible. “What’s wrong? Please… tell me what’s happening.”
“I have to go back to the doctors.” Katri said, still not meeting Ryan’s gaze. She ran her hand through her hair, which was frizzy and untamed as Ville tended to wear his own.
His eyes went wide as his heart leapt into his throat. “Are the babies alright?”
Katri tried to speak, but had trouble getting the words out. “It’s me and my weak body.” This time she wasn’t able to stop the tears from coming down her cheeks.
“What’s going on Katri?” Ryan asked, reaching out to touch the back of her wrist which was covered in the sleeve of her slightly loose hoodie, the color of henna.
“I didn’t do so good on my glucose test, so the doctor wanted me to come back.” Katri explained, finally looking to Ryan, her eyes wide and frightened. “I didn’t tell Bam and Ville because... I didn’t want them to worry.” She sniffled sharply, using her sleeve to wipe away her tears. “Please Ryan… you're the only other person I trust here. Please go with me? I’m so frightened…”
Ryan cut her off by pulling her close and hugging her. “It’s alright Katri, of course I’ll go with you.”
“Thank you.” Katri whispered back, slowly releasing Ryan. “Ville and Bam had some things to do today, so they are preoccupied for the moment.”
“Well let’s get you to your appointment; we don’t want to be late.” Ryan said, offering her a small smile. “I’m sure everything will be fine.”

“And who is this?” The doctor asked when he came into the room and found Ryan standing next to Katri.
“A friend.” Katri responded, smiling at Ryan quickly.
“Alright.” The doctor went over what he wanted her to do. For the last three days Katri had been on a strict diet, which involved eating 150 grams of carbs every day. For the last almost fourteen hours she had consumed nothing but water. Now the doctor would take a sample of her blood and have her drink a glucose solution as she had at the original test. Then she would have more blood drawn, once an hour, for the next three hours. The samples would be compared… “to see if they are within normal ranges or not. Shall we begin?”
Katri reached out with her free hand and took Ryan’s, “I am.”

Katri smiled a little when she noticed Ryan gently drawing on her bandage. “What are you doing?”
“Decorating it…. It’s tradition.” Ryan answered, pausing so he could smile at her.
“Tradition?”
“Yup.” Ryan said as he went back to drawing on her. “Whenever we have to get fixed up at the hospital, we always decorate the wrappings we leave in.”
“Who?”
“Me and my friends.”
Her smile returned, “Does this happen a lot?”
“Have you ever watched Jackass?” Ryan asked as he looked to her again, surprised when she said no. “Well maybe that’s a good thing. You might not like me anymore if you watched some of the shit I use to pull.”
“I don’t think I could stop liking you.” Katri said softly, giggling when she noticed the way Ryan blushed.
“I don’t know…” Ryan mumbled, trying to focus on his work. “I did some crazy things.”
Katri went to say something else when she noticed the doctor coming towards them. She stood up, reaching out to touch Ryan gently on the wrist as they awaited the news.
“I’m sorry… but it’s what we feared.” The doctor said, causing Ryan’s heart to drop into his stomach.
“Feared what?” Ryan asked, looking to Katri who was on the verge of crying again.
“Gestational Diabetes.”
The tears came down Katri’s cheek as she turned and hugged Ryan.
“What does this mean?” Ryan asked, holding Katri tightly.
“Her tests didn’t come out to badly, but its enough for some concern. She should be alright as long as she eats a healthy diet and monitors her glucose levels. It’s not uncommon for women in a pregnancy involving multiples to develop it.” The doctor explained.
“Does this mean I’m diabetic?” Katri asked.
“Not at all, most likely it will go away once the babies are born. It does mean you are at risk to developing it again if you ever get pregnant again… or even developing diabetes later on in life.” The doctor said following it up with a reassuring smile. “I see no reason at this point why we have anything to be overly concerned about. You were a healthy person before the pregnancy and you have been trying your best to maintain that. I think once we go over some risks and things to be concerned about, you will be just fine.”
Katri nodded and tried to smile, “Thank you.”
“I assume you will let the fathers know about this?” The doctor asked, looking between the two young adults before him.
“We will.” Ryan said softly, touching Katri’s back gently.
“Alright, well if I can borrow Katri for a few minutes to go over a few things.”
“Can Ryan come with me?” Katri asked, pleading the doctor with her eyes. “I just don’t want to be alone right now.”
The doctor looked at Ryan and then smiled at Katri. “Of course he can. This way then…”

Katri sat in the car silently as they came to a red light. In her hands was her new blood glucose monitoring device. It was small enough for her to wrap her hand around it completely, gray and purple in color. She would have to test herself before and after every meal to ensure her blood sugar levels were healthy.
Ryan peeked at Katri and frowned, feeling the weight of her problem on his shoulders. Suddenly an idea popped into his head, this seemed like a good enough moment as any to bring it up. “When did you say Bam and Ville would be back?”
Katri blinked as if coming out of a dream before looking at him, “Huh? Oh… probably not until tomorrow.” She frowned again and hung her head.
Ryan nodded, “We should go out to eat some place nice.”
“Like where?” Katri asked softly.
“How about a great little place I know of in Philly?” Ryan offered, smiling when he noticed how Katri had perked up a little. “Have you been to Philly yet?”
Katri shook her head, “No…we kept talking about it, but I never felt well enough to go.”
Ryan let his jaw fall open in an exaggerated motion, as he flipped his turning signal so they could switch lanes. “Well let’s change that right now.”
“You really want to take me to Philly?” Katri asked, smiling a little as she thought about everything they could do there.
“Do you really want to go?” Ryan asked softly, smiling at her gently.
Katri looked down for a moment, trying not to smile more before nodding. She bit on her bottom lip as she turned her gaze on him again. “Yes, I really want to go.”
“Then we shall go.” Ryan said, turning into the next lane so they could head into the city. “We should do some shopping while we're there.”
“I don’t have a lot of money with me. I’m not sure if I will have anything after dinner.”
“Did I say you had to pay for anything?” Ryan asked.
This time Katri’s jaw dropped, “I couldn’t…”
Ryan hushed her in a non obnoxious manner. “You will… it’s my treat.”
Katri slowly closed her mouth, nodding as she looked down again. “Fine, but I’ll pay you back.”
“Do you want to know how you can pay me back?”
“Yes.” Katri said as she turned to look at Ryan again.
“Just smile and be happy.” Ryan responded, sneaking a peek at her. “And not one of those little, oh if I have to smiles either missy. I mean a real smile; like you just had the most amazing day of your life smiles!” He said in a tone that made Katri laugh. He watched her for a moment, the way she held her hand to her mouth like a shy Asian school girl, the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed, which made him smile too. “Just like that.”
Katri wasn’t sure how she should answer that, so she just nodded, fussing with her hair as a distraction. “My stupid hair keeps getting in my way.”
“Here take a rubber band.” Ryan offered, extending his arm out to her since he had one around his wrist.
“Why do you have one there?” Katri asked as she touched his arm gently to retrieve it, using it to pull her hair in to a bun.
“Honey, you’re not the only one who can’t do a thing with their hair sometimes. I mean, look at this mess.” Ryan said as he did a bad version of a gay voice, tugging at his hair. “It’s a rat’s nest! I just get so sick of it! So I throw it back in a bun and say the hell with it. Only you look much better when you do it than I do.”
Katri burst out laughing, wiping away tears of happiness, her cheeks flushed for a whole new reason now. “Are you serious?”
Ryan chuckled, blushing for a different reason than her. “No… everyone I know has daughters and they always want to brush my hair for me.”
“Awww… you’re such a wonderful man Ryan.” Katri said gently, smiling as she settled back in her seat. “I love it when people play with my hair.”
“Me too actually.”
Katri turned her head so she could look at Ryan. “I’ll remember that.” When he looked at her, she winked before giggling some more.
Ryan shifted in his seat. “That’s just not right.” They both laughed as they drew closer to their destination.

Their trip to Philly had been filled with fun and was a nice distraction from the news they had received. Once they got to the restaurant she realized how hungry she was and gladly devoured the food they got. She tried to help pay, but Ryan refused to let her. They then went shopping at some maternity stores, which Ryan again treated her to some new things. Katri told him he was being too nice, but Ryan brushed it off, saying he had lots of money and no one to spend it on.
They got back to West Chester and it was still storming, or at the very least it had started storming again. They played in the rain for a minute or two before heading into the house, which was still empty. Once they had both dried off, they settled on the couch.
“Why do you always sit like that?” Ryan asked, indicating to the way she pulled her legs close.
“Why do you always sit like that?” She asked with a bright smile, indicating to Ryan who was sitting in a semi slouch position.
“Don’t turn this around on me, we are talking about you and the fetal style position you take when you sit.” Ryan joked, which made Katri laugh.
“You’re crazy.”
“So I’ve been told…but not as much as Bam.” Ryan commented which made Katri laugh all over again. Silence settled over them and Ryan noticed her playing with her ankle bracelet. Actually when he looked closer he noticed it was a set of at least four or five bracelets. They were gold and two of them had a different set of simple beads on them. One of them was plain while the other had a little amulet on it. “What does that mean?” Ryan asked softly, leaning over her legs so he could gently pick up the amulet.
A serious tone took over Katri’s face as she looked away from Ryan, leaving the impression she was hesitating to answer.
“It says… Saint Christopher protects us.” Ryan read softly, looking to Katri. “Who is Saint Christopher?”
Katri drew in a breath, “He is a saint in the Christian faith… he is said to protect travelers.” She answered softly. “He is said to have carried people across a river, in order to try and serve god. One day he carried a very heavy child who turned out to be Jesus.”
Ryan nodded, “Is that the reason there is a man carrying a child and what appears to be water?”
Katri nodded, looking at her hands some more.
“It’s very nice.” Ryan said, brushing his fingertips against her ankle before he sat back. “Did you get that on one of your trips?”
“No.” Katri said softly, afraid to look at him for a moment. “It was a present.”
“From who?” Ryan asked, shifting a little closer.
“Luka…” Katri said, finally looking at Ryan again. “My ex boyfriend.”
“Oh…” Ryan looked down with her this time and was silent for a moment. “That was nice of him.”
Katri nodded, “He bought it for me to... protect me on my journey.”
Ryan chewed on his lip, “That was really nice of him. He… must have cared about you a lot.” He paused there for a moment, drawing up the courage to ask, “If he cared about you so much… why aren’t you with him still?”
She didn’t answer right away and when she did, she got up as she spoke. “He wanted things of me I couldn’t give him.”
