[Prologue]
[1]

"Bam? Bam, are you even listening to me?"

His head snapped up at the sound of his name, and he groaned inwardly as his father stared at him reproachfully.

"Please don't tell me you fell asleep again..."

Jess nudged him in the side, muttering in his ear and Bam glared at him, inconspicuously flipping him off under the table so that his father couldn't see.
Jess laughed it off, looking back up to face their father and biting down on his lip to try and stifle it.

"You have to start paying attention, Bam. No one will ever take you seriously otherwise! How can you expect to lead the pack if you won't even keep your head screwed onto your shoulders for five minutes?"

Bam bit back the words he wanted to say -- the words that would vehemently tell his father that he doesn't want to lead the pack, that he's quite happy without his head on his shoulders thank you very much. Instead, he put his head down, mumbled something incomprehensible even to himself, and waited patiently for his father to continue.

"As I was saying; we're relocating. Jasper got a little out of control..."
Bam couldn't help the groan that escaped his lips. Jasper was always causing trouble for the pack, and everyone was sick of it. It was he who almost got their kind discovered the first time, and now it looked like it had come close to happening again.

"Can't we just tell him to fuck off?" Bam asked bluntly, and his father's eyes blazed.
"Brandon Cole Margera, if you don't start acting like the wolf you are supposed to be, I'll banish you instead!"

Bam shot out of his chair, unable to help his reflexes. His skin was prickling, his nerves alight beneath his skin and his eyes flickering golden. He could hear Jess' feeble attempts to calm him down, stop him from transforming, but Bam ignored him, staring his father down, his body rigid.

"Bam -"

"Shut up and listen to me. You have all these fucking expectations of me, don't you Phil? I'm always the heir. The future leader. I'm never just your son, am I? When will you learn that maybe I don't want all this responsibility? That maybe I just want to be myself for once. But I bet you don't even know who that is, huh?" he spat the words out, his skin prickling more violently with every word until he forced himself to calm down.

Breathing a little easier now, Bam felt the tingles beginning to calm, and his eyes returning to their normal colour.

His father and brother were staring at him, seemingly lost for words. Jess looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole, where Phil stood rigid, his mouth slightly open as he struggled to find the words he wanted to say, yell.

Bam didn't give him a chance to. Before anyone could even think of stopping him, he was out the door and charging through the house, determined to reach outside where he could get the fuck away.

His skin was alive again, his eyes shining gold and his heart racing. He could see the door that would grant him his freedom, and he ran harder, faster, throwing it open without halting his movement until finally, he was outside. The wind whistled past him as he continued running, finally allowing the change to take a hold of his body. His bones contorted somewhat painfully, but it was a pain he had long since become accustomed to, and he barely took notice of it as he sprinted. Fur forced its way through his pores, and Bam easily fell down to four legs instead of two. He felt the adrenaline pooling in the pit of his stomach as the transformation allowed him to run faster, and he headed straight for the line of trees in the distance.

Branches whipped at him as he tore past them, one delivering a nasty scratch just below his left eye, but he didn't care. His head and heart were full of loathing for them, for everything that was being forced upon him, and he craved the few minutes where he could just be Bam. Where he could momentarily forget that he was the son of Phillip Margera, and everything he was expected to be.

It wasn't until he was far away; aching and panting, did he slow and eventually stop, collapsing to the forest floor beneath his feet. He closed his eyes as he felt himself changing back, his lungs struggling for air.

And lying there, alone and exhausted, naked in the middle of the forest, he began to wonder where exactly they were going to relocate to.
