Another bang was heard coming from Dani’s room and Ville waited for the telltale yell.
“Dad?” Dani shouted through the door. Ville bit his lip, refusing to answer. Dani knew the rules. “Da-d!” He yanked the door open. “Have you seen my ip- ” His voice trailed off and his blue eyes widened as he saw the 69 Eyes singer.
Jyrki tensed on seeing him and stood, unsure to act in front of this boy who was trying so hard to be a man. “You must be Dani,” he finally said and stuck out his hand. Dani grinned and took it enthusiastically, happy to be treated like an adult.
“I’m-”
“Jyrki, I know.”
“Well, it was good meeting you, but I have to go, I’ll see you later, Ville.”
“Where are you going, can I come with you?” Dani followed Jyrki to the door and Ville pulled him back, embarrassed at his son’s eagerness.
“No you don’t, you can’t invite yourself out with people you barely know.”
He pouted and folded his arms. “Well, whose fault is that?”
Jyrki gave a nervous cough and Ville remembered he was still there. “I really do have to go, we can hang out another time, I’m sure.”
**
Dani sat on the edge of the stage, scowling through the whole set, sighing dramatically as lighting and sound was checked and rechecked. “I’m bored,” he shouted over the music, looking up at Ville.
“You knew what you let yourself in for when you wanted to come along,” Ville said, moving the mic from his mouth so not everyone could hear their bickering.
“It never used to last this long though; I think you’re getting old.”
“And I think you’re getting too big for your boots.” Ville wagged his finger at him, seeing a glimpse of unity as Dani stuck his tongue out at him, it warmed his heart to see and Ville laughed. “If you stop interrupting we’ll be done soon.”
Grumbling Dani lay back on the stage, swinging his legs over the edge.
Ville watched him from the corner of his eye, singing automatically. His son sat up sharply when he heard a noise, and he jumped from the stage running to The 69 Eyes, as eager as a puppy he bounced at their heels.
Ville put the microphone back in the stand and looked sideways at Mige, could see the worry in his eyes. “Don’t say anything, OK? You guys go on ahead, we’ll catch up.” He told his friend. He stepped down from the stage and followed his son.
“You want us to order for you?” Burton asked.
Ville looked back over his shoulder. “Please, you know what I like and he-”
“Burger and chips, got it,” Burton saluted Ville and gave a quick grin before following the rest of the band out.
“Hey, dad! Look what Jyrki gave me,” Dani held up his hands, now covered in over large, black fingerless gloves with bright white bones stitched down the fingers, “they’re so cool.”
“You didn’t have to do that.” Jyrki shrugged, and that small movement made Ville feel guilty, he didn’t understand why, and didn’t want to stick around long enough to find out.
“Come on, kid, we need to go get some food.”
“Can’t I stay and watch them set up? You said I could hang with them later.”
“Burton has already gone to the restaurant to order. Maybe tomorrow?”
Jyrki touched Ville’s arm and he froze, it was the first time in over thirteen years they’d touched. “He can stay if he wants.”
Everything in Ville’s mind was screaming no. It was a childish thought but he automatically wanted to say no because Dani wanted it and The 69 Eyes singer was OK with. He felt like they were ganging up on him, which was stupid, but he couldn’t help himself.
“He can stay tomorrow, Burton’s already ordered. Come on Dani.”
Ville could feel his son’s eyes burn into the back of his neck as he walked away, and he resisted the urge to turn around.
“Fine. I’ll have dinner with you, but then I’m calling mom.”
