Take Your Idiot To Hell Day

Oh wait, that sign actually says "Take Your Son or Daughter To Work Day". Today was one of those days I was actually reminded that I work in an office environment where dozens and dozens of actual people also work. Many of them have children, and some brought their children to work. What in Odin's name they hoped to show the children at the ( Read more... )

So I've been thinking for a while, what's the big deal about being an adult?

Sometimes, it is something to think about. To me, being an adult means having a lot more responsibilities, and it isn't always a lot of fun. There are a few good things about being an adult.

I guess those responsibilities sort of creep up on you and you don't even notice.

So then Mo Willems never heard of modern society? Thinking of kids as short adults is dangerous. A couple hundred years ago, kids were worked pretty hard because they were thought of that way. But on the flip side, I like how his work appeals to both since sometimes your tastes stay pretty much the same no matter how old you are.

I think the primary difference is that the older one gets, the more one is able to better appreciate things like Shakespeare or Renoir films. No matter how smart and cultured a 15 year old might be, he won't be able to appreciate things like King Lear, Grand Illusion or Mozart until he's had more life and art experience under his belt. Ideally adulthood means growing more capable of becoming more cultured. Unfortunately, 95% of adults are just big children with neuroses, and most have never grown up in all the ways that count.

You've got a point there. Experience does matter, and you can relate things like literature, music, and film to things you understand, things you've seen, etc. But yeah, there are too many adults who have never grown up.

Beautiful essay and I really like how the last sentence tied into everything you just said. Being an adult isn't as different as grown-ups would have kids believe.

Adults just like to scare kids. And honestly, about half an hour later I remembered my original reason for writing, that went in a completely different direction (but I like how I managed to tie things up at the end).
