Oh wait, that sign actually says "Take Your Son or Daughter To Work Day". Today was one of those days I was actually reminded that I work in an office environment where dozens and dozens of actual people also work. Many of them have children, and some brought their children to work. What in Odin's name they hoped to show the children at the office is beyond me.
So I've been thinking for a while, what's the big deal about being an adult? I wondered this for years, and I'm still not sure what makes them so special. I'm not talking about parents here, they probably go through hell, but an ordinary adult with a 9-5 job? What's the big deal?
I'm 23. It's been almost 2 years since I graduated college, and I've been working a 9-5 (well, actually, I get in at 8) job for a while now. I spend a total time of 5 hours a week commuting. Even though I live at home, I have my own car and I help out with the bills. Plus I do my own laundry, and I cook my own meals (sometimes...but hey, my dad leaves for long periods of time and I do fine without him).
I have the same general attitude about life as I did when I was a kid. I joke around at work, but I get done what needs to be done. And I come home to watch DVDs of shows I watched when I was a kid. The other day I overheard a few women gabbing and saying "We're like Charlie's Angels! You can be Farrah!" Can someone explain to me how that's any different than when I was pretending to be Chip while playing Rescue Rangers in 4th grade?
And the thing is, I'm not talking about me going to work cosplaying as Kid Flash. I'm professional at work, even if I've got the JLU theme song in my head. These adults think they're so much older and wiser and more mature than I am. That's not what it looks like. Some of them don't even know how to turn corners. I've seen them, they bump into each other all the time. So much for dignity.
I'd like to officially announce that the illusion has shattered. I don't believe that all adults are mature and something to be admired. Sure, there are good, hard working adults out there who are upstanding citizens. But all I've seen are just 35 year-old high school students (not unlike the cast of The O.C.). I don't even want to know what goes on inside their minds, but I already went on my rant about how they don't care about their fellow man.
So I'd just like to say this to all the adults who looked down on me as a kid - Screw you. Screw every last one of you. The adults who were impatient with me when I was ordering at Burger King. That salesman in the furniture store who was short with me when I was trying to find my mom. I'm on your level now. You're no better than I am. And if I ever run into you again, if I see any adult who even reminds me of those before, I'm going to beat the crap out of them. I'm going to beat them with a sack of doorknobs, tie them up, and drop them into a volcano. And I'm going to enjoy it. Then I will be tried as an adult.
