So I have this Facebook "friend" who's an ex-colleague of mine. Over the last couple of years she's become a rabid Trump supporter who has been going "full MAGA".

Recently she posted the below list of questions that's being going around on no doubt Parler and other Trumpist media platforms.

Yeah, I flip between just feeling sorry for their childlike personalities and wanting to judge them for being unironically delusional. I'm not sure where on the spectrum this is truly coming from, but seeing that they are adults, I tend to the latter.

I was pretty shocked at how many of my former colleagues from my days at the music company have been on the "don't infringe on my rights/force me to wear a mask/tell me I can't celebrate Christmas" train. I also have super religious family members who post QAnon nonsense that I've hidden from view, but every once in a while I'll check back into their feeds and confirm that the craziness has only multiplied.

I've been trying to grapple with the big divide lately and I can recognize I have a lot of biases that excuse things that fit into MY world view that those on the opposite side of things would seize on as hypocritical. I don't know how we get back to a place where we can hold different views and not have it become a blood battle for the soul of our country.

Ugh. I am sorry you have to deal with that so up close.

I can agree that I have biases too, sure. However where this whole Trump train has gone - I just can't stretch my mind so far as to rationalize it in any way. It just seems too bizarre for anyone to truly believe and the only way I can explain it is that these people must be having some sort of visceral reaction that stops them from reasoning in a normal healthy way. I don't know how to fix it either, it's like that part of the country needs to see some sort of mass-psychiatrist or something.

I also believe though that many of the people involved who caused this are followers rather than leaders. Trump, white nationalist groups, and right wing shock-jockeys are the instigators of this more than anything. While it's true that 74 million people voted for Trump, I don't think all those people will suddenly rise up and start a civil war. There may be people who will try, but they will not succeed.
