Hardy is kind of an acquired taste, but I liked both "Tess" and "Jude." "Jude" is pretty grim, but worth the read, imo.
Are you aware that Hardy was drawing some parallels with the love lives of the Romantic poets (particularly Byron & Shelley) in "Tess"?
