trente huit: anger arrives.

I miss

I ought to

Fuck, I hate her. I hate her.

Someone ought to die for this.

I am sick of.

[Private to Donny - audio]

I don't think I can live like this, Donny.

I shouldn't be this weak and pathetic. I can barely defend myself like this, I can barely do anythingI want. I want this to go away. And all I have the empty promise of some magic ( Read more... )

[Welp, that was a cry for help. Donny decided right off the bat that he and Clapet needed a little talk, so he locked the door to his cabin and went off to visit his poor, depressed inmate, listening to the post with his communicator to his ear once along the way.

He pocketed the device and knocked on the door loudly.]

Clapet, it's me. Can I come in?

Well, I'm not saying that you shouldn't fight. You should always fight for certain things. [He held up a hand and started to count on his fingers.] Fight for your faith, fight for your life, fight for what's right, and fight for love.

[He nodded and put his hand back down.] But you keep telling me that death is the worst thing imaginable, and I just refuse to believe it. There are things worse than death, is my point.

[There was an awkward moment where he looked down at his leg, then took a hefty drag on his cigarette,]

You might have a point. But I still don't want to die. Didn't want to die. This was the only thing I could do to prevent that. What do you suggest, Donny, that I let her kill me? Or... now, what, am I supposed to top myself? Don't be fucking stupid.

Nah, I'm not suggesting any of those things, I'm just posing a question. Hypothetical stuff, is all.

[Clapet raised an eyebrow,] But if you aren't recommending any of those things, then, hypothetically, there aren't things worse than death. Because you'd still not recommend dying as an alternative.

[Donny sighed. Boy, he could really go for two cigarettes right now.] No, that's not what I meant. I'm trying to make a point, guy. I'm just telling you think of the alternatives - if you had fucking died. Just....nevahmind.

[Donny was just fine with letting his inmate be miserable for a spell. He'd try again later.]

I'd be fine, yes. But I'm just saying nobody's going to make the conscious decision to die, either. It's like... the doctors. They're not going to kill someone, no matter how fucking paralytic they are. Might make them better in the long run, but nobody's gonna do that.

[Donny was tired of this.] Alright. Jesus, just shut up, Clapet.

[He got to his feet and walked a good distance away from his inmate, just to keep himself from hitting a guy in a wheelchair.]

You know, some people might make the decision to die. Some people do it.

...Would they?

[Clapet just couldn't believe that.]

Why? Aside from being suicidal, which doesn't count.

[Donny didn't answer him for a while. For a really long while. He stared at the wall, not really looking at anything in particular, and then finally turned to glance at his inmate.]

I did.

[Clapet paused for a minute, and thought about it.]

You did? Why... what happened?

Yeah. [Donny stood sort of awkwardly for a second, wondering what the hell to do with his hands until he decided to just cross his arms.]

Operation Kino. Hitler and the rest of the German high command were going to stop into Paris for this film premier, and the idea was to blow up the cinema while they were all inside. Well...[He shrugged.] Planning the operation didn't go as smoothly as planned, and me and my guys were sort of left wondering what the hell we were gonna do.

[Donny wondered back towards the chair and flumped down on it.] Me, my lieutenant, and Private Ulmer decided we'd strap dynamite to our legs and head on into that film premier anyway.

[Clapet just stared for a long moment.]

You killed Hitler. And yourself.

[He paused again]

I'll give you that. That... That's kind of impressive. I can see why you chose to do that.

[Donny nodded slowly.] Yeah, I killed Hitler and myself.

[He had been given the choice not to though. There were other Basterds who had wanted to do it, but he was Staff Sergeant. He had to. He owed it to the guys, and hell, he owed it to all the Jews and everyone else stuck fighting that fucking war.]

I'd do it again to, if given the choice.

Even if someone else would have done it? Wanted to do it?

Me doing it meant somebody else lived. I had a duty to do it too.

[And he had wanted to. He wanted to kill Hitler. He wanted to storm in there and blow up the Nazis. It had been a hell of a way to go.]
