New journey

Today I had my first session with a Personal Trainer. Her name is Jennifer, she is young, svelt, and...has a border collie! Most of you know I've been battling a bad back/and or hip for a while now, and NOW it's horrid. I have tried massage, chiro, infrared, had X-rays, heat, ice, you name, it.

But, I know part of the problem is my weak core...so ( Read more... )

Hey Liz, good for you!

But can I offer a differing opinion?

when something is actually "hurting" I worry that a personal trainer isn't the best way to go. An actual Physical Therapist can help you diagnose the problem, then slowly build you to a place where you're STRONG and balanced and able to then go to a trainer and do your work. They will guide you through to make sure you don't experience pain or WORSE ... hurt yourself worse. So yeah, I worry. We're not kids anymore, and "getting into shape" isn't the main goal here. The goal is to relieve the pain, built the core strength and make sure all the while you're not aggravating an injury or other trouble spot.

Just my 2-cents. I happen to know, by the way, a GREAT guy in Hillsboro who does PT and is super funny. If you're interested, let me know.

I share the same caution as Rosie. Maybe some mild core work at home but I would wait for any heavy duty training/therapy until after you see the ortho.

Thanks for the advise gals, and I agree. The goal,is to strengthen adjoining muscles...and right now we are working on arms and core...which, by the way, are like jelly! She is very aware of my injury/problem, and asked how each exercise felt, pulled, hurt, etc. as we did them. I am now thinking I have chronic bursitis of the hip...as I was able to do almost all the exercises without pain, except a circle motion of the leg. But afterwards...ouch! Soooo sore! But then I iced it, and was basically fine. ...one ding a relative terms...as in not normal, but not horrid either.

I really liked Jennifer...she has a rescue border collie, so we chatted the whole time, and the hour went by quickly. I will see how the week progresses with my pain level, and hopefully be able to train again on Monday.
