Title: Like Crumpled Paper

Notes/Warnings: This is a vignette written very House on Mango Street style. I'd recommend not clicking the cut if you're not a fan of the style
They don’t kiss, they don’t love, they don’t cry, they don’t feel.
They lie on her bed in a room covered with memories. There are maps on the ceiling and letters she can’t read on the walls and pictures Narnina doesn’t want her to see hidden in the corners.
One day when Narnina is out she finds one. Narnina’s there and young and happy and she’s smiling and Jun doesn’t remember her smile. She’s linked arms with two boys, one taller with a crooked smile and brown hair like a wet mop and the other tiny and frail with hair like sunlight underground and eyes like the sun.
She doesn’t touch the picture because she’s afraid the frail boy will crumple like paper.
She stares at it a long time because she wants to memorize it, to keep this picture of a happy Narnina engraved in her mind forever. She's so busy trying to not forget that she doesn't hear Narnina come in.
What are you doing! Narnina yells and spins Jun around like a plate until they're facing eye-to-eye. Jun just looks surprised because she didn't know Narnina would be so angry so she just stays silent because her voice has jumped out her throat and hopped away.
Narnina rips the picture and stalks off, seething and boiling like a pot just about to overflow. She doesn't say anything as she leaves and slams the door behind her.
Narnina doesn't come home until much later, when only one little white star is still twinkling high up in the sky. She looks tired and old and her breath smells a little sour but she's not mad anymore. She looks at Jun a long time, looking like a coat that's been worn too many times, before mumbling sorry and heading off to bed. But Jun isn't actually sure that Narnina apologised because Narnina never says sorry.
Jun crawls into bed into bed shortly after, and when she tries to kiss Narnina, Narnina doesn't say no.
