“I know you think I’m stupid,” she sniffled. “I’m just so tired of all of this.”
“Tired can make you stupid,” he said it like he was reluctantly admitting she had a point.
“Is it really a bad idea?” she asked, looking at the small collection of pill bottles in front of her. “Or are you just worried about losing your link to this world?”
“You want to end up working at the undead DMV for all eternity?”
“You did,” she finally looked him in the eye and damn if hers weren’t dull and lifeless already. “And you got out of it.”
“Your Mom won’t be there,” he said, bringing out the big guns. Sure enough, she flinched. “You won’t see your Dad again. They will have moved on. You won’t be able to.”
“I’d still have you,” she said, but her fingers were fidgety now, as if she wasn’t sure of that.
“You have me now,” he reminded her, letting himself grin even though the rest of his face was worried. “This miserable won’t be forever. That one will be.”
“So what do I do?” she asked him.
“Sleep,” he said. “Not eternally,” he added quickly when her eyes flicked back to the bottles. “Get some rest. There’s no rush. I’m not going anywhere. Neither are they. Come on.”
He disappeared and reappeared on her bed and patted the spot next to him. She blinked at him and then shuffled over to crawl in beside him. He raised an arm and she didn’t even make a face at the smell. She nestled into his side and he let the arm drop around her.
“This isn’t the tired I meant,” she said into his side.
“I know,” he said. “Remember what you’re talking to. I know.”
